ESOL

  • City College Southampton is a specialist ESOL centre.
  • Everything you learn will teach you the skills you will need for work or further study.
  • 12 hours a week of your course will be focussed on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English. 1.5 hours will be doing maths and 1.5 hours learning the ICT skills you need for work and study.
  • Across the year you will learn about living, working and studying in the UK and about the values of British society.
  • You will study with people from all over the world and learn about their cultures too.
  • The amount of time you will spend learning with us will depend on your current English skills and how quickly you make progress. The average amount of time learners spend with us is two years.
  • Once you achieve an Entry 3 qualification you are able to progress onto vocational courses at level 1.

In previous years many of our Entry 3 learners have progressed onto courses such as: motor vehicle; construction; beauty; hospitality; art and design; and culinary arts.

If you want to progress onto courses that start at level 2, you will need to achieve a level 1 or level 2 qualification with us. In previous years our level 1 and level 2 students have progressed onto courses such as: IT; engineering; art and design; business; health and social care; early years; and media.

Others have gone on to study GCSEs and A-levels at other colleges.
