City College is the biggest college for teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in the Solent region.

We are a specialist ESOL centre and are unique in offering 13.5 hours of lessons dedicated to improving your language skills. This means that you are able to make rapid progress towards achieving your goals.

Our full-time courses for 16–18 year olds will improve all of your skills in English – speaking, listening, reading, writing and pronunciation.

You will be in a class with students from different countries and learn about English culture and society. You will also improve your maths and IT skills as well as having the opportunity to attend trips and take part in activities to enhance your learning.

In the ESOL classes you will learn all aspects of the English language – speaking, listening, reading, writing and pronunciation. Depending on your previous qualifications and assessment, the following options are available: 

  • ESOL Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2
  • Functional Skills Maths Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2
  • GCSE Maths
  • Essential Digital Skills Pre-entry, Entry 3 and Level 1

Our ESOL courses use classrooms and our computer suites.

We will give you a test to check your English languages level. We will review any exam results you have to advise you on the right level of course.

You will be required to attend a college interview prior to enrolling onto this course.

Once you have completed your course you can progress to the next level of study. This can the lead to GCSEs, A-levels, technical courses and then on to university or work.
