Our annual Visual Arts Exhibition was officially launched last night (Tuesday 19th June) with a private view event to celebrate our creative students' final year of work.

Two floors of the hub were transformed into a large exhibition space featuring creative work from full-time students as well as adults on part-time and higher education courses. The creative art work on display included a diverse range of specialisms such as fine art, print-making, painting, sculpture, theatrical make-up, photography, illustration and graphics.

Students were present during the private view to talk to invited guests about their journey of research, investigation and experimentation which led them to their final exhibition work.

Jever Rubrica, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design student, commented: "I really enjoyed the digital media aspect of the course so based my final major project on a digital media piece using the sculptress software. I investigated the horrors of war and invented a character which captured the post trauma stress disorder (PTSD). I’ve now been offered places at both Bournemouth and Portsmouth University to study Illustration."

HND Photography student, Ginine Molineaux, completed the higher education course in two years and is now progressing to Solent University to top up her degree. She said: "I chose the course at City College as it was heavily practical and I loved the hands-on aspect. My passion is location photography and I’ve learnt so much from the tutors here."

Level 3 Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up students were also put under the spotlight with a catwalk show in our professional theatre, where they showcased their imaginative full body make-up and fantasy hair creations. Our second year students designed and created characters inspired by elements of nature from the Amazon Rainforest whilst the first years recreated characters from well-known films and comics. These characters, modelled by our Performing Art students, interacted with the public throughout the art show.

Principal, Sarah Stannard, welcomed guests to the private view and said: "We’re very excited by the end of year show for Visual Arts – exhibiting work by our Art and Design and Photography students and with a catwalk show for Theatrical Media Make-up.  Students who have completed their studies at City College are progressing to a high quality range of art schools and one very talented HND photography student is moving directly to a Masters degree, all of which is testimony to the quality of the work these students have been supported to create."

Guests were also welcomed to the event with canapés and drinks prepared and served by our hospitality students.

Delighted with the success of the opening night, Art and Design lecturer, Victoria Rick added: "Well done to all of our students for their enthusiasm towards producing a fantastic end of year exhibition that they should all be so proud of. The thought and commitment they have given to this years’ show has been fantastic!"
