City College students picked up three awards at the annual Southampton Media & Film Awards, including best cinematography for Bradley Bower’s ‘Black Hole Sun’.

The Southampton Media & Film Awards were held on Wednesday 4th July at City College’s hub theatre. The awards evening, run by the Southampton Education Forum, celebrates films and print media created by both GCSE students and students over 16 from schools and colleges across the city. For the films there were six categories as well as the overall title of Best Film; Cinematography, Mise en Scène, Use of Sound, Editing, Visual Effects and Original Idea.

Half of the awards in the post 16 group were won by City College’s level 3 Creative Digital Media Production (TV & Film) students. The title of Best Cinematography was awarded to Bradley Bowers for ‘Black Hole Sun’, Best Use of Sound went to Alexandra Lyashova for ‘Curiosity of Silence’ and Best Editing was awarded to Alex Tilley and Lewis Avery for ‘Assassin’.

As well as the winners, another star of the night was guest speaker and former Solent University graduate Rowan Johnson. He spoke about his creative video production company, Southpoint Films, and inspired many of the students with his success.

Principal, Sarah Stannard, said: "We were thrilled to have five films nominated in the different categories and to win three of them highlights the very high standard of work and the talents of our students. It was a wonderful evening and I was so pleased to see our media students recognised for their quality films."
