Awards Evening Highlights 2019

Students, parents, businesses and VIPs gathered at City College's Awards Evening on Wednesday 6th November to celebrate the significant successes of over 50 of our students and the achievements of staff and to thank two major businesses for their contribution to the College.

The evening gave students first-hand experience in organising and running a high quality, Oscar-style awards event. Production Arts students designed and managed the stage, lighting and sound; Media students filmed throughout the evening and Hospitality students created and served a delicious menu of street food. Guests were entertained by Performing Arts students with two magical performances from Frozen - the Broadway Musical.

Principal Sarah Stannard welcomed The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Peter Baillie, students and their families and expressed pride in the successes of the College over the last twelve months. She announced that not only had there been an improvement in student results for the fourth consecutive year, but also that the numbers of students applying for full-time and part-time courses this autumn had increased, resulting in many courses being full.

"Our Annual Awards is a fantastic event, where we are able to celebrate the determination of our students and staff to be the very best they can be.  Everyone at City College is very proud of what our students achieve and that we help develop the knowledge and skills which enable them to achieve a bright future."

The Adult Student of the Year, Young Student of the Year and Apprentice of the Year each received their awards from the Mayor of Southampton who said: "I am proud to be celebrating your achievements with you tonight and recognise that many of you will be taking the exemplary skills you have learned at City College to help our growing businesses and organisations in Southampton compete globally."

Two businesses, Morgan Sindall and Network Rail, were particularly applauded for their dedication to supporting students with work experience and inspiring young people with information on the variety of careers available in their sectors.

A representative from Morgan Sindall said: "We are very proud to have won this award. But I must tell you that our partnership with City College has actually paid us dividends as we are employing, direct from college, staff who are ready and keen to work, with all the right skills. We would certainly commend its services to other businesses."
