Information for current students and apprentices

Student communications:

Video update from the Principal - 15/05/2020
An email was sent to all current students and apprentices with a video update from the Principal. You can also access the video message via Citybit. If you haven't received an email, please email enquiries@southampton-city.ac.uk with your student ID and correct email address so that we can update your contact details and re-send the message.

Keep your personal details safe from fraudsters. If we need information from you related to your course or studies (including bursary payments), it will always come from a City College Southampton email address ending in @southampton-city.ac.uk. If you have any doubt about a request for information, check with us before replying.

Visiting the College

We have moved to online learning.  Students should not come into College unless specifically invited by a member of staff.  All current students and apprentices remain members of the College for the rest of this academic year.

Staff are available to students and apprentices through their College email and Citybit direct messaging.  Contact details for specific services such as Safeguarding and Bursary are available on Citybit.

When the College recommences face-to-face teaching we will let everyone know.

Qualification FAQs:

How will I receive my results?

Results will be sent out by both e-mail and text on:

Level 3 results:
Thursday 13th August 2020
GCSE results: Thursday 20th August 2020

Exam certificates normally arrive around October/November depending on the awarding body. Once we receive certificates they will be posted out to you. At present, the college is not open to students.

How will I achieve my qualification this year?

Depending on the qualification you are taking you will either be awarded a grade through the calculated grade process or you will come into college for some final assessments and examinations.

Calculated Grade process:

The Government have said that there will be no exams for GCSEs and A-levels this year.  This also applies to maths and English Functional Skills, ESOL, BTECs and UAL qualifications.

For qualifications that will receive a calculated grade your teachers have been asked to calculate a grade for you, based on the work you had done to 20th March, and send these grades to the Awarding Body.

The Awarding Body will review all the grades from all colleges and schools and decide the final grade for each student.  They will then issue the results.

Your teacher and the College is forbidden from telling you any grades until the official results day, please don’t ask.

Results will be available on 13th August (Level 3 qualifications) and 20th August (GCSE, Level 2, Level 1, Functional Skills qualifications).

Assessments and Examinations:

Awarding Bodies have now told us which qualifications still need an assessment or an examination.

If you need to do an exam or assessment then we will contact you via email and tell you when you need to come in. Assessments or exams will take place starting from 22nd June.  Our aim is to complete all assessments by the end of July.

Please read the Rules for Students about being on-site at college.  If there is a reason you must not come to college then please tell your teacher as soon as you can and we will make other arrangements.

I am studying a Higher Education course, what about my qualification?

You should know what is happening with the awarding of grades for your HE course.  Ask your teacher if you are unsure of the arrangements.

I am an Apprentice at the end of my training, what about my assessment?

We will receive nationally agreed information on arrangements for assessments and will inform those at the end of their training as soon as we know the details.

Ask your assessor or the Apprenticeship Hub apprenticeships@southampton-city.ac.uk if you want to check what is happening for your apprenticeship.

Will I be able to progress to the next level or another course at College?

Your teacher will have spoken to you about your next steps this month.  If you have not heard from them, get in touch with them as soon as you can.  You can also contact the Admissions team on enquiries@southampton-city.ac.uk

Will I still be able to go to University autumn 2020?

Yes, there will be a nationally agreed process for giving grades to university preparatory courses (e.g. Access to HE, Extended Diplomas, and other Level 3 qualifications).  The universities who’ve offered a place will write to you directly about their admissions process.

If you need support, our Futures team are available to speak to you in an online appointment.  Email futures@southampton-city.ac.uk to book a time and they will call you.
