Work experience helps to secure future

Meet Lara, she did her work experience in the John Lewis beauty department while she was studying Level 2 Beauty here at City College. It was from then on that she knew that she would love to continue working there. After completing her course her dreams came true and she is now working as part of the new Beauty Society in John Lewis.
We were lucky enough to be able to chat with her about her experiences and how the work experience helped her find her future. She explained to us that City College, and especially her tutor Debbie Woodford, really inspired her to think outside the box and to really come out of her shell throughout the course which really provided her with the drive in order to apply for the work experience at John Lewis. She received great feedback and really enjoyed the experience.
The Beauty Society is a new John Lewis service that provides their customers with unbiased advice. Lara explained “we undergo two weeks of training to be able to help customers find the most suitable products for them and offer advice on different styles. Since we opened this new area only a couple of weeks ago the feedback has been great, we held a bloggers launch party, where we invited influencers to celebrate with us, there has been a lot of interest and a large number of bookings. It has been very exciting.”
She added that their training took place in London. “The first few days we had training in the London College of Style in Bloomsbury where we had general make-up and skincare training with industry experts. This was followed with training at the head offices of the brands we work with including Estée Lauder owned companies such as La Mer, Estée Lauder, Mac, Origins, Tom Ford, Clinique and many more. We also had training with Clarins, the Shiseido group (Nars and Laura Mercier, Charlotte Tilbury and Elemis). There were also industry talks with experts like Sali Hughes and Abigail James.”
She was keen to add: “all the training really helped me to gain good brand and product knowledge and learn many tips and tricks from experts which really added to the knowledge that I learnt in college. Without City College, I wouldn’t have found that John Lewis was where I wanted to work. The tutors at college really know their industry and it provided me with a strong foundation to start off my career as well as the confidence I need to succeed.”
