Local industry gives students the competitive edge
Published: 26th February 2018
Earlier this month, our creative arts and service sector students enjoyed an action-packed industry week, during which they had in-depth experiences of many Southampton and Solent businesses, who highlighted a variety of sector-specific jobs and helped them develop their skills and knowledge.
Our industry weeks aim to arm students with additional skills and information about what it’s really like in the world of work and to help them understand what will give the best chance to follow their dream career.
Throughout the week a host of local businesses and organisations gave a variety of talks, masterclasses, tours, demonstrations and set challenges. Within the packed programme: Health students observed intravenous cannulation and gained insight into the professional work of paramedics, nurses and dermatologists; Production Arts explored the behind-the-scenes work of a cruise ship's on-board entertainment team; Beauty students participated in a tanning masterclass; whilst Hospitality students toured a vineyard, competed in a “cook-off” and were provided with an extraordinary dining in the dark, sensory experience.
P&O Cruises, GLS Lighting, South Central Ambulance Service, Headway, Southampton Sight, Harvest Fine Foods, Essential Cuisine, Bennett & Merritt Barbers, Sienna X, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and ICAAL Creative Digital Marketing were some of the many businesses involved this year.
Principal, Sarah Stannard, said: "We know how vital it is to their future success that students meet employers regularly. It really helps young people to understand directly from employers what they are looking for when they recruit and in every Industry Week students discover that there are a wider range of jobs they could do with their qualifications than they ever dreamed of. That’s why at City College we run many initiatives like Industry Week, which mean our students leave with much more than a qualification; they leave with a head start in life.
"Our excellent business links and contacts in industry are invaluable to this work and we’re extremely grateful for their support."
