Students, apprentices, employers and staff were recognised for their dedication and outstanding achievements at our annual awards evening on Wednesday 2nd November.
Over 40 student successes were celebrated from across a wide variety of professional, technical and creative subjects, with awards for students and apprentices from many different qualifications and levels.
Outstanding academic achievement, determination and consistently going above and beyond were among the many reasons our learners had to be proud, as they were honoured at the Oscar-style event attended by over 150 people.
The awards evening gives current students the opportunity to practice and showcase their technical and professional skills to the public as they work on running the event. Production Arts students ensured the stage, lighting and sound was set, Media students took care of both filming and live streaming, and Hospitality students prepared and served welcome drinks and a tasty menu of street food. Performing Arts students performed to guests during the evening with songs from the musical “We Will Rock You” and the award citations were read by two Performing Arts students, Aki Alli and Emma Duarte. Principal Martin Sim welcomed award winners and their guests, staff, governors and award sponsors, and expressed immense pride in the successes of the College during its special 70th anniversary year.
Martin said: “The annual awards is a fantastic event, one that I had been looking forward to since starting in July. I’m delighted that we are able to come together and celebrate the determination and commitment of our students, apprentices and staff as they work so hard to be the very best that they can be. Everyone at City College is extremely proud of our student’s achievements and that we help develop the knowledge and skills which enable them to achieve a bright future. Very well done to everyone receiving awards!”
Twelve special awards were presented by the Chair of the Corporation, Geraint Davies. One to a local marine business for their dedication to the training and development of their apprentices, to six to staff for excellence, along with the Adult Student of the Year, Young Student of the Year and the Apprentice of the Year for which the winners were announced on the night.
Winner of City College’s Young Student of the Year, Todd Axtell, a level 1 bricklaying student, said: “The award was a total surprise, I really didn’t expect it but it feels great to be recognised.”
Business apprentice, Jessica Fellows said: “I was gobsmacked to be awarded Apprentice of the Year, the best bit was my dad being so proud of me that he cried.”
Upon receiving the Employer Recognition Award, Justin Turner, General Manager of PB Asher, said: “We are over the moon to have won. It was very nice to be recognised for our passion and dedication to the college and our marine apprentices. It really was an incredible feeling and the event was amazing!”
