About this apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in service, maintenance and repair of commercial and passenger carrying vehicles. There are more than 32 million vehicles on the UK’s roads which means, many motor vehicle technicians are needed to keep them roadworthy.

As a motor vehicle apprentice you will work on all areas of vehicle mechanics and electrics, from the engine and exhaust systems to the air conditioning and security features. You will develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and the communication skills required to work as a professional and competent motor vehicle technician.

What you will learn

Typical duties will include:

  • Diagnosing and rectifying live vehicle faults
  • Advising customers if repairs are needed and how critical they are
  • Providing time and cost estimates for jobs
  • Carrying out repairs / replacing damaged parts
  • Fitting and servicing accessories e.g. radios and vehicle alarms
  • Carrying out routine servicing and checks
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Vehicle diagnostic equipment operation
  • Understanding and using vehicle wiring diagrams
  • Operation and testing of advanced electrical, engine, chassis and transmission system components
Learning style

The apprenticeship will include an NVQ diploma, functional skills and knowledge based element or technical certificate.

As an apprentice you can expect to undertake work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage.

You will attend college one day a week to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.

 

Facilities

Learn in our large purpose built motor vehicle workshop equipped with the latest diagnostic testing and repair facilities. At City College we have a range of commercial and heavy goods vehicles available to practise on.

Assessment

By completing a workplace audit the Apprenticeship Coordinator will be able to establish whether you are covering the right level of tasks in the workplace to support the criteria necessary for the on-site evidence.

Entry requirements
  • GCSEs at grade 9-4/A*-C in English and maths (or equivalent)
  • Have successfully completed the Heavy Motor Vehicle Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship

You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

Information for Employers

Evidence of knowledge and competency can be obtained through: observations in the workplace, physical products of work, reports, plans, online assessments, correspondence, witness testimony, discussion and questioning.

Apprentices will also be assigned an Assessor, who will visit them every 12 weeks to ensure they are happy with their progress and on track to achieve.
