About the course
This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in service, maintenance and repair of commercial and passenger carrying vehicles. There are more than 32 million vehicles on the UK’s roads which means, many motor vehicle technicians are needed to keep them roadworthy.
What you will learn
As a motor vehicle apprentice you will work on all areas of vehicle mechanics and electrics, from the engine and exhaust systems to the air conditioning and security features. You will develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and the communication skills required to work as a professional and competent motor vehicle technician.
Typical duties will include:
- Finding and identifying faults
- Advising customers if repairs are needed and how critical they are
- Providing time and cost estimates for jobs
- Carrying out repairs / replacing damaged parts
- Fitting and servicing accessories e.g. radios and vehicle alarms
- Carrying out routine servicing and checks
As an apprentice you can expect to undertake work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage. The apprenticeship will include an NVQ diploma, functional skills and knowledge based element or technical certificate.
Learn in our large purpose built motor vehicle workshop equipped with the latest diagnostic testing and repair facilities. At City College we have a range of commercial and heavy goods vehicles available to practise on.
No previous qualifications are required and a full assessment will take place to ensure you have the skills to complete the qualification. Those wishing to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship will require GCSEs A*-C/9-4 in English and maths (or equivalent) or demonstrate, through the assessment process, that you are able to achieve this.
Note - You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

You will attend college one day a week to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.
Evidence of knowledge and competency can be obtained through: observations in the workplace, physical products of work, reports, plans, online assessments, correspondence, witness testimony, discussion and questioning.
Apprentices will also be assigned an Assessor, who will visit them every 12 weeks to ensure they are happy with their progress and on track to achieve.
