About the course
This course is ideal if you wish to start training to become a qualified counsellor and have no previous experience. It is a short introduction which outlines the concepts of counselling and provides the opportunity to begin your skills practice. If you wish to learn more about counselling, are working in a support role and wish to become a professional counsellor, this qualification will give you the knowledge needed to get you started in this profession.
What you will learn
This course will provide you with the skills, attitudes and ethics required to begin your training in counselling. You will be introduced to the three main counselling styles:
- Person Centred Counselling
During this course, you will take part in discussions, small and whole group work as well as practising listening skills.
The learning style of this course is largely student-centred and relies on you having the motivation and maturity to complete tasks independently. You will take part in group discussions and skills practice.
In this course, the only work that will be assessed are the written, essay-style homework tasks; these are marked traditionally. You are however also assessed on your attendance, punctuality and attitude.
There are no specific entry requirements to complete this course, however you will need to have an understanding of written and spoken English at GCSE level or be comfortable working at this level, as you will have to be keeping a reflective journal during your time on this course.
No interview is required for this course, so please come in to see us with your method of payment and we’ll be happy to enrol you.
Places are limited and are only secured when enrolment has been completed. Please note - an application does not secure your place on this course.
If you are successful in completing this course (gaining a merit or distinction) you can then progress to the level 3 certificate in counselling skills at City College.
You will need to supply adequate paper and pens to enable your full participation in all theory classes. You will also be required to attend every session so that you can take part in all the group learning and engage in a number of different activities.
