About this apprenticeship

A hospitality team member can work in a range of establishments, such as bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues or hotels. The role is very varied and you tend to specialise in a specific area. Specialist areas include food and beverage service, barista, food preparation, housekeeping, guest services, reception, reservations, conferences and banqueting.

What you will learn

As a Hospitality apprentice you will follow one of two pathways:

Food Production
You will perform basic food processing tasks such as preparation, cooking and regeneration of food in line with specifications and identify how to follow kitchen procedures to maintain food safety and quality. Know how to maintain excellent standards of hygiene and how to use equipment correctly and store food safely.

Food and Beverage Service
You will learn the range of food and beverage service styles and standards within hospitality operations. You will learn how each stage of food and beverage service meets the business standard, including customer arrival, promoting menu and other items, taking and processing orders, serving food and drink and taking payments.

Learning style

As an apprentice you can expect to be completing work based learning with an employer and paid a wage. 

You will attend college one day a week to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.

Entry requirements

Each employer will state their own requirements but you should have GCSEs at grades 9-4/A*-C in English and maths (or equivalent).

If you have not already achieved level 1 English and maths, you will be required to have completed your exams in these subjects prior to the completion of your apprenticeship.

You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

Additional information

Information for Employers

Each apprenticeship needs to include 20% off-the-job training. This must amount to 20% of the apprentice’s contracted employment hours across the whole apprenticeship. Off-the-job training is learning undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the apprenticeship.

End Point Assessment
Each apprentice will need an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship. It measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed.
