About this apprenticeship
The Building Services Engineering Craftsperson apprenticeship is for heating and ventilating craftspeople wanting to gain experience in or progress to installing, testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning and decommissioning components of large-scale industrial and commercial systems.
This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in heating and ventilation. As a heating and ventilation apprentice you could work as a fitter installing and repairing heating and ventilating systems or a welder using specialist skills to join pipe work systems or installing the ductwork that ventilates buildings. Work could range from fitting air conditioning units in a department store, to installing large industrial boilers in a manufacturing plant.
What you will learn
A Craftsperson has detailed knowledge of the system’s operating principles. They also set, identify and establish the requirements of the job, whether from drawings or client’s other instructions. They would also:
- Liaise and work with other trades, suppliers and clients, as appropriate
- Solve problems within the scope of the work they carry out
- Undertake work to comply with all relevant standards
- Plan and monitor work programmes for installing, testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning and decommissioning systems
- Contribute to adjusting the configuration of systems as they are installed
As an apprentice you can expect to undertake work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage.
This apprenticeship should take 36-48 months to complete.
There are no formal entry requirements but each employer might state their own requirements. You will also be required to have completed your exams in level 2 English and maths and level 1 in IT prior to the completion of your apprenticeship.
You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

You will attend college two days a week in year 1 and one day a week in year 2 to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.
Each apprenticeship needs to include 20% off-the-job training. This must amount to 20% of the apprentice’s contracted employment hours across the whole apprenticeship. Off-the-job training is learning undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the apprenticeship.
End Point Assessment
Each apprentice will need an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship. It measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed.
