About the course
This qualification (at grade C/4 or above) is an absolutely vital requirement for progression to an advanced level programme, employment, further education or university.
The GCSE in English course offered at City College is designed to give you the confidence and knowledge required to improve a GCSE D/3 grade (or Level 2 Numeracy/Literacy) to that vital C/4 grade needed to progress into any further education courses. You have the opportunity to either undertake the course at the same time you take part in your own vocational study or take it as a standalone course.
*Our English courses are FREE – you would only need to pay for GCSE English if you have already achieved this qualification at grade C/4 or above.
If English is not your first language and you have not been resident in the UK for the last 5 years, please apply for ESOL.
What you will learn
The GCSE in English Language will cover the functional elements of English Language – grammar, spelling and punctuation – as well as introducing original and creative writing, understanding and producing non-fiction texts, speaking and listening.
Your overall grade is made up of marks achieved in externally assessed examinations and regular controlled assessments throughout the year.
You need a D/3 grade in GCSE English or level 2 in functional skills.
You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto the course. If you are a mature student (aged 19+), you will complete a diagnostic assessment.
