About the course
If you are an enthusiastic and committed learning support professional with a desire to progress, this course is right for you. If you currently work in learning support and have at least a year’s experience paid or voluntary, and the ability to study at this level you could work towards a nationally recognised qualification in your field. On completion you can top up to a full degree if you wish.
This course is an excellent foundation for those wishing to transfer into teaching by completing additional Level 6 credits to gain a degree and allow you to meet the requirements for postgraduate study for qualified teacher status.
Please note to study this Foundation degree at City College, you must apply for the course through the University of Portsmouth. On applying you will be asked to select your location of study on the form, where you can choose City College Southampton.

What you will learn
A key component of this foundation degree is the application of the ideas and information you learn in taught sessions in your workplace. As you review your own practice and knowledge, you will enhance your prospects in this field.
The course covers the following units:
- Supporting learners with diverse needs
- Learning theory
- Supporting learning with social and emotional needs
- Literacy and numeracy
- Own choice research and enquiry projects
- Personal professional development including key skills
You will attend for the equivalent of a four-hour session per week during term time. These are arranged so you can benefit from working in groups as well as attending presentations and lectures. Lectures provide a basic grounding in a particular topic, regular group seminars and discussions allow for opportunities to explore ideas and share good practice. One-to-one tutorials will help develop your learning and key skills and will monitor your progress. Some topics will be taught through online distance learning.
You are encouraged to find a workplace mentor who will also support you in your practice by acting as a critical friend in your reflection and thinking about personal and professional development.
100% Coursework/practical assessment
Coursework assessment takes a variety of different forms including case studies, reflective reports, essays, presentations and group work. You will be provided with clear assessment criteria for all your assignments and tutorial support to help you understand academic requirements.
- Level 2 English and maths or GCSE equivalent
- You must be working in either a voluntary or paid learning support role for a minimum of 12 hours per week
- Those with no formal qualifications may be considered but will need to have extensive experience in learning support
- You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto the course
