About the course

Equivilent to 3 A-levels this is a recognised route to university and is the second year of the level 3 art and design qualification.

You will study a broad range of 2 and 3 dimensional disciplines representing the major career pathways in fashion and clothing. You will be drawing inspiration from contemporary and historical designers and techniques found throughout the world. Learning includes visits to galleries, exhibitions and museums, and written work in the form of design annotation, presentations and essays. You will get to showcase your work to the public, local employers and higher education institutions at the end of year exhibition.

  • Screen, lino and mono printing

  • Designing and making costumes - working to a ‘live’ brief with strict time constraints 
  • Different techniques to change the overall silhouette of the body
  • Traditional corsetry and contemporary fabric manipulation techniques
  • Self-directed project to produce a collection to showcase at the end of year show

  • Large and fully equipped photography studio

Entry requirements
  • 5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 (including English, maths and preferably in Art or Textiles), and
  • Level 3 in Fashion (including Level 2 in Literacy)

You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto this course.

Additional information

Equipment needed

  • A good quality sewing machine – at college we use Bernina’s and Jenome’s
  • A fabric measuring tape
  • An un-picker
  • A set of sewing needles including a blunt tapestry needle
  • An A3 sketchbook for each project
  • Fabric scissors

A mannequin and overlocker would also be beneficial to have at home but not essential. You will be encouraged to upcycle and be as resourceful as possible in their use of found and salvaged materials to reduce costs.
