This part-time course will provide you with the opportunity to learn a basic range of methods, skills and approaches in drawing and painting. It is suitable for beginners and for those who would like to improve on their existing experience.

Drawing & Painting Leisure will focus on a range of observational drawing methods and techniques including shape, tone, composition, mark making and measurement. You will produce a portfolio of drawings and paintings, mainly from primary sources such as still life, studio set ups, life model, domestic interiors and urban environment.

The course is run as a sequential programme of study allowing you develop drawings with a particular focus, linked to the previous session. It will give you the opportunity to develop your confidence and to refresh and extend your understanding and awareness; if you already have some drawing experience.

Please note that all courses are subject to minimum numbers. If there are too few enrolments, the College may cancel the course. A place on your chosen course is not confirmed until enrolment is complete and any relevant fees are paid.

There is no funding available for this course, so all students will be required to pay the full course fee. 

The course fee must be paid at least 3 weeks before start date.

Classes take place in specially designed art studio and involve a range of fun and engaging practical activities including still life, printmaking, life drawing and painting. Expert tutors are present at every class to guide and support you with your work, your ideas and help you to progress and achieve. There are no assessments or exams.

There are no academic entry requirements other than a commitment to the course and an ambition to develop your creative ability, skills and confidence in this area of Art & Design.

This course acts as an initial step into the wide and expanding range of Art and Design activities and opportunities. If you wish to take the knowledge and experienced gained whilst on this course further, the next step would be a course with a qualification attached, this could include an Award, Certificate or Subsidiary Diploma with progression into further study at BA, MA and PhD level.

This could lead to a career in any area of Art and Design; animation, art history, art journalism, curator-ship, digital media, fashion, fine art, graphic design, illustration, interior design, teaching, textiles, 3D design etc. The scope for potential career destinations within the world of art and design is virtually unlimited.

The tutor will provide all materials for each session, however you can bring your own drawing and painting materials if you wish. The drawing studio is fully equipped with easels, drawing boards, paper etc. There will be a drawer to safely store large work for the duration of the course but an A2 folder/poster tube is recommended to get drawings and paintings home.

If you would like to purchase your own equipment, these are recommended items you can choose from: Drawing pencils (B, 2B, 3B, 4B and 6B), range of coloured pencils, charcoal, pen and ink dip pen, fineliner pen, eraser, fixative, chalk pastels and oil pastels. Basic painting equipment such as a range of paintbrushes, palette knives, a watercolour palette (or tubes) and a selection of acrylic paints.
