About this course

This course is for you if you're thinking of pursuing a professional career in the construction industry.

Upon successful completion of your study, you will receive the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Construction. This is a nationally recognised qualification which offers you a wide choice of career routes into the construction industry, either as an apprenticeship or as full-time employment, or into Higher Education studies.

Part-time adult students will follow one academic year, one day per week study programme at City College, which will include the following units: 

Externally assessed mandatory units

  • Construction Principals  
  • Construction Design 

And internally assessed mandatory units

  • Construction Technology
  • Health and Safety in Construction

Learning style

This is mostly a theory-related course with practical elements such as CAD. You will learn to complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

We will also help you to prepare for external exams which are assessed by the awarding body BTEC.


The 4 units are all mandatory, 2 are externally assessed and the remaining 2 are coursework and will be internally assessed.

Entry requirements
  • 5 GCSEs grade 9-5/A*-C (including English, maths and science) or relevant equivalent qualifications
  • Level 2 Diploma in Construction, Engineering, Plumbing & Heating (with GCSE English, maths and science grade 9-4/A*-C)
  • Other level 2 qualification will be considered alongside current work experience in the construction industry
  • Those with substantial professional experience in the sector will also be considered.

You are expected to alreay be in a construction related job role or in the process of taking a construction job.

You will be required to attend a College interview prior to enrolling onto this course.

What next?
  • Employment and apprenticeship with construction companies (private and public sector)
  • HNC in construction related studies at college or university (subject to university/college entry requirements for HNC/HND courses)
