About this apprenticeship
If you have a passion for working with children helping them to develop their social and practical skills an early years apprenticeship will develop your practical skills and knowledge in this exciting industry. These skills can be applied directly to your job, build your confidence and enable you to take on the additional responsibility to progress in your career.
This advanced apprenticeship is suitable for you if you can work with your own initiative, planning and organising your own work and/or supervising others.
Early Years apprenticeships are for people who work with children aged from birth to 16 years (and their families) in settings or services whose main purpose is children’s care, learning and development such as:
- Child minder’s own home
- Community based services
- Day care
- Extended schools
- Playgroups and pre-schools
- Primary care
What you will learn
Tasks could include how to:
- Develop positive relationships with children
- Engage in personal development
- Promote children & young person’s development
The apprenticeship will include a CACHE certificate/diploma combined qualification, functional skills/GCSE, and an Employment qualification.
As an apprentice you can expect to be doing work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage.
You will attend college one day a week to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.
Your Apprenticeship Coordinator will complete a workplace audit with you. This will enable them to establish whether you are covering the right level of tasks in the workplace required to meet the criteria required to complete this apprenticeship.
A full assessment will take place to ensure you have the skills to complete the qualification.
As this is an advanced apprenticeship, all applicants will require:
- GCSEs at grade 9-4/A*-C in English and maths (or equivalent) OR
- Can demonstrate through an assessment that they will be able to achieve this level of English and maths
All applicants will undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

Information for Employers
Evidence of knowledge and competency can be obtained through: observations in the workplace, physical products of work, reports, plans, online assessments, correspondence, witness testimony, discussion and questioning.
Apprentices will also be assigned an Assessor, who will visit them every 12 weeks to ensure they are happy with their progress and on track to achieve.
