About this course

Do you enjoy the Great British Bake-Off? Have you ever wanted to bake your own bread or make some delicious confectionary lines including cakes and biscuits? Or would you like to master the art of cake decorating? Well now is your chance!

Our short evening courses cover a lot of different bakery and cake decorating techniques - see 'What you will learn' for detail.

These are popular courses for all budding bakers and there's nothing like having the satisfaction of making something yourself. 

All equipment and ingredients are provided. Best of all you get to take all your products home!  You will be provided with a recipe book with all the recipes and information you need to create your products at home.

Baking for Beginners is for anyone interested in baking.

No experience is necessary. All abilities welcome.

25/09/18 - Introduction to Baking

During this enjoyable six-week course you will learn how to make:

  • Cookies
  • Chocolate log
  • Gingerbread house
  • Shortbread
  • Stollen
  • Tunis cake (decorated Madeira cake)
  • Plus other goodies

13/11/18 - Christmas House Novelty Cake

Master the skills of cake decorating and create an amazing Christmas House novelty cake.

During this six-week course you will cover a lot of different skills from piping, moulding, cutting out, colouring and much more, enabling you to create some fantastic special effects. It has a Christmas theme but all the skills learned will be transferable to any other cakes.

You will need to bring 2kg of white marzipan, 2kg white sugarpaste and a square fruitcake (10” square x 3” deep) to your first class.

08/01/19 - Gluten Free and Diabetic Baking

A unique introduction to baking gluten-free and sugar-free items. For three classes you will make items with no gluten, then items with no sugar for the following three classes.

During this six-week course you will learn what having gluten and sugar in your recipes does and what we can replace them with to produce various tasty cakes, biscuits and bread.

26/02/19 - Cake Decoration

Ever wanted to be able to decorate your own cake? Well now you can!

During this six-week course you will learn the art of covering a cake in marzipan and sugarpaste, how to colour paste, and skills in moulding and shaping, cutting, piping, making simple flowers and more. It has an Easter theme but all the skills learned will be transferable to any other cakes.

You will need to bring 1.5kg of white marzipan, 1kg white sugarpaste and a round fruitcake (8” round x 3” deep) to your first class.

23/04/19 - Introduction to Baking

During this enjoyable six-week course you will learn how to make:

  • Chelsea buns
  • Chocolate chip cookies
  • Fancy rolls
  • Focaccia and pitta bread
  • Fresh cream scones
  • Lemon drizzle cake
  • Lemon swirls
  • Plaited cheese and herb bread
  • Victoria sponge with fresh cream and strawberries
  • Wholemeal seed loaf
Learning style

All of the learning is completed through practical sessions in the college’s new kitchen facility.  The classes are instructive while in a relaxed atmosphere. After a demonstration you will make your own product. Questions will be answered and lots of hints and tips will be given throughout the course.

This course runs on Tuesday evenings. There are no assessments or written work and a college certificate will be awarded on completion.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this course, just a love of baking. Some students are already baking at home but want to improve their skills, while other students are complete beginners. All abilities are welcome.

No interview is required for this course, so please come in to see us with your method of payment and we’ll be happy to enrol you.

Additional information

Everything will be provided for you but please remember to bring containers/bag to take home your bakery goods. If you want to bring your own apron you can but a disposable one will be provided.
