About this apprenticeship

The Assistant Accountant apprenticeship is for those looking for a career in accounting. An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation.

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in working in Accountancy.

What you will learn

Running a business involves a lot of financial activities, from expenses and bills to taxes and payroll. Accounting is a highly skilled profession, with accounting staff working at many different levels.

As an Assistant Accountant your role will involve assisting in the day to day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition you may find yourself involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

Learning style

As an apprentice you can expect to be completing work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage. 

You will attend college one day a week to ensure you get the support you need to succeed. The rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer and an assessor who will visit you on site.

The assessor will visit the you once a month at your place of work to discuss your progress. The assessor will liaise with you and your line manger to ensure that this is a convenient time.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but each employer might state their own requirements.

If you have not done so already, you will be required to have completed your exams in level 2 English and maths prior to the completion of your apprenticeship.

You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto an apprenticeship.

What next?

Successful completion of this apprenticeship could help you progress to further career opportunities, such as management or senior support roles. You could also progress onto the Level 4 Accountant Technician apprenticeship.

Information for Employers

Each apprenticeship needs to include 20% off-the-job training. This must amount to 20% of the apprentice’s contracted employment hours across the whole apprenticeship. Off-the-job training is learning undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the apprenticeship.

End Point Assessment
Each apprentice will need an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship. It measures the skills, knowledge and behaviours each apprentice has developed. Employers will decide when the apprentice is ready to be assessed.
