About the course
If you are assessing candidate’s occupational competence in the workplace, then this is the qualification for you. It is a roll-on / roll-off course, with various start dates, and can be completed within a year or sooner.
The course is delivered on a flexible basis where you will be allocated a qualified assessor to support you individually through your assessor award. You would also need to organise support from a qualified assessor who will be able to mentor you within your own occupation (such as hairdressing, construction, care, etc) and countersign your assessments with two candidates who are working towards a vocational qualification.
What you will learn
Unit 301 - Understanding the principles and practices of assessment. This unit is theory based which covers eight principles of assessment. The aim of this unit is to assess the learning and development of your knowledge, understanding and practices of assessment.
Unit 302 – Assess occupational competence in the work environment. The aim of this unit is to assess the candidate assessor’s performance in assessing occupational competence in an individual’s work environment. You will be required to carry out two assessments on two candidates (4 assessments in total).
You will be expected to attend 4 sessions within a classroom environment for a 3 hour duration, as part of the assessor training, so that you can learn about the role of the assessor, how to plan assessments, the methods of assessment and the legal requirements that are associated with assessment. You will need to answer a variety of questions to demonstrate your knowledge of assessment and to complete the knowledge unit.
There are no exams for this course. You will have two units to complete, one which assesses your knowledge (Unit 301) and the other that assesses your competence as an assessor in the workplace, such as on NHS premises. (Unit 302).
Unit 302 is a practical unit which uses your assessments and feedback as evidence for your portfolio. You will need to assess a variety of evidence from two candidates in the workplace, such as their work logs, work products etc. You will be allocated an assessor to work with you on a flexible basis. They will observe you on at least 4 occasions and give you feedback with regard to your planning of assessments, and your decisions and feedback given to the candidates. All work is then collated in a portfolio for final assessment.
There are no formal entry requirements for this Award, but you must demonstrate that you are able to work at Level 3 e.g. Literacy Level 2. You will need to assess two candidates who are working on a qualification that have learning outcomes or performance criteria in which to make a judgement of competence e.g. BTEC, NVQ etc. N.B. We cannot provide candidates for you.
You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto this course.

If you are assessing in a college or simulated environment as well as the workplace, you may want to apply for the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement. If you are supporting other assessors, you may wish to progress to the Award in the Internal Quality of Assessment Processes and Practice.
