About this course
Our Access to Higher Education courses are designed for adults who want to enter Higher Education but may not have the usual qualifications such as A levels. They are accredited through LASER Learning Awards and will help you develop the skills you need to prepare for University.
The Teacher Education course aims to equip you if you wish to study at Level 3 and gain the necessary qualification entry to Higher Education to primary teaching or similar educational degree courses.
This course is full-time (2 days per week - Tuesday & Thursday). It will be essential that you attend the two days so you will be able to complete the course in one year.
To study this qualification you will need to find a placement in a school working for a minimum of two hours a week for at least two terms prior to starting the course, so you can draw on this experience to complete your education assignments.
If this is your first Level 3 qualification, you may be entitled to all of your fees being paid. If you're aged 19 or over and take out a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan to fund your Access to HE Diploma, then go on to successfully complete your degree or subsequent higher education course, the Government will pay the loan that covered your Access course. Please be aware if you do not complete the course, you will still be liable to pay the full course fees. A deposit will be required at the start of the course if you are applying for a loan, but this will be returned when your loan is finalised.

What you will learn
The course includes both mandatory and subject specific units. The mandatory units are common to all of the Access to Higher Education courses at the college.
These units are:
- Reviewing and planning for future study and work
- Critical thinking
- Independent academic study
- Using IT to support academic study
- The subjects of the course are:
- Molecules and cells
- Cell division
- Inheritance and evolution
- Physiological processes
- Sociology of education
- Introduction to Sociology
- Sociology of the Family
- Perspectives in Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Non-experimental research in Psychology
- School Based Experience including completing a case study of comparisons of the development of two children of the same age
The course is assessed through your final portfolio. Within each unit there are a number of assessment methods including:
- Oral presentations
- Report writing
- Short answer questions
You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto the course.
The School Based Experience assignments will relate to the work placement that you undertake in a primary school on a minimum of ten sessions, which could consist of two hours. To gain the Diploma, you will need to achieve 60 credits at Level 3. Assignments at Level 3 are graded at pass, merit or distinction. Don't worry if you haven't got strong presentational skills at the start of the course as you will be taught these skills during the year.
It is advisable to check the number of distinctions that you are expected to achieve by the university before the start of the course.
- GCSE grade C or above in English, Maths and Science
- A good command of ICT skills (most assignments will need to be typewritten)
- Aged 18 or over (preferably 19 or over)
- You will be required to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto the course
- To prepare for your interview, you must bring your GCSE English, Maths and Science certificates with you, and proof of ID if you intend to enrol
It is essential that you will organise some work experience in a primary school while on the course in order to undertake a research project into classroom management. You will be required to do a minimum of 20 hours in total over the duration of the course (which could be one hour a week for 20 weeks) working with children from aged 4. It will be essential that work experience is organised before the start of the course in September. (A letter from the primary school will be sufficient as evidence to support your work experience if you don’t already work in a primary school).
If English is not your first language and you have taken qualifications out of the UK, you will need to have the equivalence checked by NARIC prior to your interview. An excellent command of English (IELTS 7) is required.
Most students are expected to progress onto Higher Education, particularly onto courses within the field of Primary Teaching.
You will be rquired to attend an interview at the College prior to enrolling onto the course.
You will be required to attend some work experience in a primary school for a period of two terms as minimum. You will be able to use the evidence from this experience towards 6 credits of your assessments.
