Streetworks Inspector - Hampshire County Council

Hook Depot primarily covering Basingstoke, Hart and Rushmoor. • Closing Date: 30/08/2017

Streetworks inspectors regulate utility works on the public highway to ensure that their signing and guarding and reinstatements comply with National specifications.  Where works fail to comply you will arrange for and ensure that remedial works are carried out.

Part of the job will include preparing reports on utility company performance, responding to enquiries from members of the public and councillors and other third parties.

A Streetworks inspectors work could involve:

  • Inspection of live and completed works sites
  • Investigating and resolving defective reinstatements
  • Customers– communicating with customers/stakeholders via the telephone, letters and email
  • Reports – writing and/or contributing to reports issued to customers/stakeholders
  • Liaising with other industry experts within the County Council, neighbouring Authorities and utility companies.

Working as a Streetworks inspector within the Streetworks team, the key elements of the role will include:

  • Preparation of simple spreadsheets
  • Managing workloads to meet targets
  • Ensuring utility works meet the required standards
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Carrying out Inspections
  • Working as a member of a team
  • Contributing to providing solutions to problems
  • Working both in an office environment and on site.

During your Apprenticeship you will be provided with the opportunity to learn how to do the tasks listed above through training, experience and with support.

Future prospects

This is a permanent position, subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship. Past apprentices have gained promotion within the organisation, progressing through the relevant professional progression routes in a variety of roles.
Things to consider
The job does involve site work, some of which may be in poor weather. The ability to drive is essential as many works sites are not accessible using public transport. During severe weather events, it may be necessary to work outside normal office hours.

Desired skills

GCSE Grade A-C Mathematics and English (or equivalent) within last 5 years.
