Painter & Decorator Apprentice - Winchester College

Wage

£17,000 (gross) per annum. Salary is paid monthly, in arrears, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually and this appointment will next be reviewed in 2020. The post-holder will work an average of 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 8:00am until 4.30pm in the winter and 8.00am until 5.00pm in the summer.

Vacancy Description

The Apprentice Painter and Decorator will develop the practical skills in painting and decorating, in association with an appropriate apprentice training course and will support our existing team in carrying out painting and decorating work required in the maintenance, improvement and alteration of the colleges varied building stock.

Roles and Responsibilities

To be part of a small team of painters within a busy Works Department under the supervision of the Lead Painter. The mentor and immediate supervisor will be the Lead Painter, working under the direction of the Works Manager. In order to support the departments wide ranging duties, the apprentice Painter & Decorator will require a willingness to work beyond own trade.

The successful candidate will work towards a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Painting & Decorating taught through a combination of on and off the job training on block release over a duration of 18 to 30 months (depending on the qualification taken).

The Apprenticeship includes units relating to;

  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Preparing surfaces
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller
  • Applying foundation and plain papers
  • Producing specialist decorative finishes
  • Applying hangings to walls and ceilings
  • Producing specialist finishes for painted decorative work
  • Producing specialist architectural finishes for decorative work
  • Applying water-borne paint systems using airless equipment, and applying water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure (HVLP).

At the end of the apprenticeship the successful candidate will have achieved a Level 2 Diploma in Painting & Decorating.
