About the Course

This workshop is ideal for those with a little or limited knowledge of Barbering and are wanting to develop their clippering techniques - you will require a previous qualification in Hairdressing ideally up to NVQ2. 

Course Content

This course will cover topics on how to steady your hand when free hand cutting. Designing simple patters in the hair (how, when, what and where, do’s and don’ts). How to get your clipper cuts razor sharp and graduations flawless.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to find models for your practical assessments, who will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables.

Progression

After completing this course you will have the opportunity to develop further.  Courses available are NVQ Level 2 leading to L3 and University.

Course Content

To get this qualification, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You will work with your us to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

Qualifications are made up of individual units which covers different areas of your work as a Barber.

You complete 4 core units:

• Working in the hair industry
• Follow health and safety in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp.

You also choose optional units (usually 2-4) from:

• Promote products and services to clients in a salon
• Colour and lighten hair
• Perm and neutralise hair
• Cut men's hair
• Cut facial hair
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

Katherine Boyt studied here at City College to gain NVQ Level 2 Barbering and has now successfully gained employment in a renowned barbering salon she has also entered various competitions’ and is working to an exceptionally high standard.  Katherine has now also gained her Level 3 in Barbering and is working towards her assessing qualifications which will help steer her towards a career in Education allowing her to pass on her knowledge and experience to others.

The theory side of this course requires a good standard of English A - D GCSE and students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL at  level 1, this is due to the course containing a high level of written evidence with assignments, written questions and test papers.  Ideally some previous work experience or qualification (e.g.NVQ or Certificate at Level 1 or 2 in Hairdressing or equivalent) assisting with the practical side of this course.

It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding and is not suitable for some skin conditions. It would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.

We strive to source the best value kits for all our Hairdressing courses September 2011 prices were at £85.00.  The kit itself contains everything you will need to embark on a career in Barbering.There is a charge of £30.00 for consumables to be paid at the first session on the course.

To get an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

VRQ qualifications are assessed at work or in a realistic working environment. For each unit your assessor observes you carrying out different services and checks your understanding, this information will be recorded in your log book, which then provides formal evidence of your learning.

For a Barbering VRQ, you will do hairdressing practice, learn the knowledge required and organise your own study - you'll record your achievements in a logbook packed with hints and tips from industry experts.

You might also do online courses, quizzes and games from our Virtual Learning Environment.

Progression

A Barbering qualification will enable you to seek employment within the Hairdressing Industry, and with the higher levels you could become a top stylist and go on to be a salon manager or travel the world.

Assessment

Assessments are on a continuous programme of study because this is a short course. To reinforce underpinning knowledge, students are encouraged to participate in student led activities within the class and complete assignments and case studies to produce a portfolio of evidence.

All methods are selected to meet the levels and ability of each individual student. You are required to research information for your assignments in your own time and practise your practice skills at home. You will be expected to provide models for your practical assessment

Progression

About the Course

This short course has been designed by City and Guilds for Hairdressers or Barbers wanting to take a bite size course to develop and update their technical skills in advanced colouring techniques to gain a qualification.

It is a practical course, which is underpinned by a theoretical background.  Within the course structure there are four areas of assessment. On completion, all assessments will be retained in a portfolio and used as evidence to show an external examiner.

For the theory side of this course, a good standard of English is required. Students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL at entry level 1.
