Learning Centre Events
Adult Learners Week
Adult Learners Week is a yearly national celebration of life-long learning and City College Southampton has held events to mark the occasion for the last 5 years. This year is no exception with a visit from Steve Voake, author of books for children and young adults such as The Dreamwalkers Child and Blood Hunters and for younger children, Daisy Dawson and Hooey Higgins series. Steve has won a number of awards for his writing including Southampton's Favourite Book Award, English 4-11 Best Children's Book.
He will be here in the Learning Centre on Wednesday 16th May to talk about how he became an author, what he does when he's writing and he'll be running a creative writing workshop with students who would like to try starting their own story.

World Book Night 23rd April 2012
World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books which sees tens of thousands of passionate volunteers gift books in their communities to share their love of reading. In 2012 World Book Night will be celebrated in the UK, Ireland, Germany and USA on April 23 (William Shakespeare's birthday).
This year 25 titles are specially chosen and printed in their thousands in World Book Night editions. Book Night's charitable mission is to advance the education of the public by assisting in the promotion of literacy and the celebration of books and reading by creating unique moments which focus attention on adult literacy. By focusing on the enjoyment and engagement of reading we aim to reach and inspire those who have never discovered the value of reading.
The Learning Centre holds the titles for this years World Book Night which range from Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Andrea Levy's Small Island through to David Peace's The Damned United and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. So please pop in and borrow a copy, swap your views of the books with others and come back for more!
If you are truly inspired to read more classics please also go to our e-bookshelf http://www.southampton-city.ac.uk/tis/ebooks.asp on The Information Station and search across 25,000 titles in under 15 seconds! You can download these books too.
The books will be on display in the Learning Centre in the week leading up to the event. News and programmes on World Book Day and Night will be broadcast in April.
