City College Donates PCs for Africa Schools

City College has highlighted its commitment to the environment and education by donating PCs to IT Schools Africa (ITSA).

 

ITSA reuses working computers and recycles any defective machines. In addition, it works with distribution partners in Africa to ensure the computers are recycled at end-of-life. Reusing IT equipment saves energy and resources, prevents hazardous materials from ending up in landfill and is 20 times more effective at saving life cycle energy use than recycling.

 

Andy May, City College's ICT Support Manager, said: "An IT education is vital for African school children in the modern world. IT skills are increasingly in demand by business and global economy and are paramount to securing good jobs and improving standards of living."

 

"It's great to be working with ITSA and actually seeing our old machines getting a second life in such a practical way, ensuring other students get an education. Skilled IT-trained workforce is a key factor in Africa's ability to boost its productivity, attract investment and develop."

 

The production of every PC consumes 240kg of fossil fuels, 22 kg of chemicals and 1.5 tonnes of water. ITSA strive to recover the significant cost to the environment of PC production, by reusing all PCs before eventually recycling them to recover parts and materials at end-of-life.
