About the Course
The City Horizons programme is part of the new Foundation Learning programme and is individually designed for young people like you. The programme is aimed at young people aged 16 – 18 who have lower grade (D and below) GCSE's and are looking for a programme that will help them to improve their skills and confidence and gain a vocational qualification.
The Award in Introduction to the Hospitality Industry can help you get your first job in the hospitality sector or move on to further study. You'll learn about many aspects of the industry and gain valuable practical and teamwork skills.
Course Content
This course is designed to give you an introduction to the hospitality industry. You'll cover lots of different things such as:
- customer service
- serving food and drink
- healthy eating
- using kitchen equipment
- basic food preparation.
Entry Requirements
There is no formal entry requirements for the course however we would expect you to be working at Entry Level - Level 1 (GCSE grades D and below). It is useful if you also work part-time in the catering industry whilst undertaking this qualification.
Learning Style
This course uses a range of learning methods including classroom teaching, group work, one to one assessment and the opportunity for team work and to ask questions.
Equipment Requirements
There will be the need for some equipment to allow you to work safely. This can vary from person to person so will be discussed with you at interview/enrolment.
Assessment
On going assessment throughout the year.
There will be formal exams for Functional Skills – Maths, English and ICT
Progression
In order to progress you must complete all parts of the programme including Workskills and Functional Skills.
The Introduction to the Hospitality Industry can help you find a job in a wide range of roles including:
- bar person/manager
- catering/restaurant manager
- chef
- cleaner
- concierge
- food processing operative
- housekeeper
- kitchen assistant/porter
- receptionist.
There are various progression routes including:
Level 2 vocational programme
Apprenticeship / employment with training
Supported employment or independent living
Additional Information
This course forms part of the City Horizons programme. Students will also be enrolled on IT, Maths and English Functional Skills in order to bring Literacy and Numeracy levels up to GCSE level.
