About the CourseThe £20 student registration fee is not applicable to trade union reps courses
Trade union reps are entitled to seek paid time release from work to develop these essential skills which will enable reps be more effective in their union role. The majority of information reps need to undertake their role and represent their members is online via the Internet and their employer’s intranet. Communicating with their union is usually by email, letters, posters, etc – all which need good word processing skills.
This course is undertaken through distance learning by self study. There will be access to support in the unet learning centre at the college main site in B block. Learners will also be allocated a tutor and will be given 6 hours individual support over the entire course; this will include feedback on assignments and sample tests, 1-2-1 tutorials in person, over the phone or via email. Learners that have any additional learning needs will need to discuss this with their tutor or student support when applying for the course to ensure they are provided with any additional support they are eligible to receive from the college.
Course materials will be accessed via the college website, if reps would also prefer to have printed course materials they can download a copy. se can be borrowed from the site. IT books can also be borrowed from the college library. Course ContentThis course is an excellent introduction to various IT applications. Reps will be able to choose the units they want to study for this qualification from the following options:
Flexi Introduction to using computers for reps, distance learning only. A choice of units from those listed below to a total of 9 credits.

Any type of union representative can apply for this free course. Learners should be able to switch on a computer, know the basic components of a computer and be able to use the mouse. If learners cannot do this then they need to first attend the short BCS computer and online basics course.

AssessmentReps will be expected to produce evidence that you have achieved each units requirements for gaining the unit accreditation. This free course is undertaken by attending taught class based lessons each week. The tutor will teach elements of the course, which learners will then practice during the class with the tutors support and away from the class as self study between attendance dates. As the course is taught learners will need to ensure they practice sufficiently to ensure they are ready for each class. Learners that have any additional learning needs will need to discuss this with their tutor or student support when applying for the course to ensure they are provided with any additional support they are eligible to receive from the college. As skills are developed the tutor will set learners short exercises so they can build evidence of the skills they have developed. This introduction course is suitable for anyone that has very little computer knowledge. It is also suitable for reps that:
Learning StyleHow will the courses be taught? Learning will be undertaken through taught practical sessions in set classes and by self study away from the course practising what has been learnt during the taught sessions. Self study would be about 3 hours each week depending on how quickly you pick up the skills and knowledge that you are learning.
Will I be given any support away from the course? Learners are able to visit the unet learning centre in B block at the college main site as a drop-in to work on their practice and seek support if needed. Equipment RequirementsIdeally you will have access to a computer with Microsoft office 2007 and the software appropriate to the units of learning you chose to study – this can be discussed at your interview with a tutor before enrolling on a course. Course ContentThis is the essential basic course for workplace union reps and stewards. Find out what it means to be a union rep, how to represent your members effectively and how to take up both collective and individual issues with your employer. You will also think about the future and how to influence where it is taking you and those you represent. The course helps union reps to understand their role and responsibilities as a rep. They include working together with members and other union reps; talking to members and dealing with their problems; recruiting members and getting them involved in the union; meeting management to discuss a range of issues at work and keeping members informed about wider union concerns. Entry RequirementsWho is the course suitable for? This course has been developed for new shop steward / workplace reps, those that have not previously attended an initial reps course and those that have attended their own union reps induction course. If you are not sure if this is the right course for you and need some guidance please contact the centre via the contact details below. AssessmentHow will the qualification be gained? There are no exams, however, course participants are required to build a portfolio of evidence showing that they have contributed and fully participated in the course and have developed the necessary knowledge and skills to be proactive and effective in their role in the workplace. The tutors observations and assessment of the reps contributions to the course will also provide evidence towards gaining the qualification.
Are there any additional costs? There are no fees to attend this course. The registration fee of £20 mentioned above does not apply to trade union reps attending trade union & TUC courses. Any out of pocket expenses occurred by attending this course must be claimed back from your employer or union – you will need to speak to your union to learn what expenses you are entitled to claim and how to submit any claims.

Health and safety at work is a major issue for all employees. Research shows that workplaces that have trade union health and safety reps have a significantly lower rate of accidents. This course will provide a thorough grounding in health and safety issues and give new reps an opportunity to discuss issues around health and safety at work. It includes the safety reps role and rights, introduction to health & safety legislation, risk assessments and undertaking workplace safety inspections. Entry RequirementsWho is the course suitable for? This course has been developed for new Health & Safety rep or shop steward / workplace rep, those that have not previously attended an initial safety reps course and those that have attended their own union safety reps induction course. Communicating with their union and members requires good word processing skills to produce letter, report, posters etc. Understanding how to use spreadsheets effectively enable reps to manage project budgets, develop charts and graphs etc to illustrate statistics, and information, develop or track members etc. Using PowerPoint to present information to other union reps, officials and member and their employer professionalises the union reps approach to their union role.
This course covers content similar to the ECDL Extra level 2 course. It is undertaken through distance learning using online course materials with tutor support via email, telephone and occasionally 1-2-1. You can start the course at any time and be given 8hrs tutor support over the entire course.
The course will be achieved by developing a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that you have met the course learning outcomes. If you would like to gain the ECDL Extra level 2 qualification then you can opt to take the BCS Exams – there will be a BCS exam fee for this. You can discuss this with your tutor. Course ContentWhat skills will be learnt? Word-processing - This unit helps learners develop their ability to create word-processed documents, entering text, editing and formatting work and using graphs, tables and pictures for a professional finish. The learner will also understand how to work more effectively using tools such as the spell-checker and mail merge. Spreadsheet software - This unit helps learners develop a working knowledge of spreadsheets from entering data and formatting worksheets through to creating charts and producing high quality documents. Presentation software – This unit introduces the learner to this important means of business communication. Upon completion, learners will be capable of producing high quality presentations using a variety of tools including charts, graphs and drawn objects Improving Productivity Using IT - The ITQ requires the inclusion of content that builds the learners ability to work more effectively with IT. The course helps reps identify, prevent and control risks helping to build a safer and healthier workplace. It encourages reps to involve members in safety issues by developing a collective approach to health and safety. It outlines the most recent health and safety law and information, enabling reps to effect real change in the workplace by undertaking a workplace project. Entry RequirementsWho is the course suitable for? This course is designed for health and safety reps that have already completed Health and Safety Stage 1 or its equivalent. Reps need to first complete this TUC Health & Safety stage 1 course of it equivalent before applying for the TUC Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety AssessmentThere are no exams, however, course participants are required to build a portfolio of evidence showing that they have contributed and fully participated in the course and have developed the necessary knowledge and skills to be proactive and effective in their role in the workplace. The tutors observations and assessment of the reps contributions to the course will also provide evidence towards gaining the qualification.

Course Content
Stepping Up builds upon your existing knowledge and experience by closely examining the role of representatives in changing work environments and taking an in-depth look at employment law, equality, discrimination and bargaining issues. Reps are required to complete a project of choice linked to the workplace or a trade union issue. The units to this course are:

About the CourseThe £20 student registration fee is not applicable to trade union reps courses Trade union reps are entitled to seek paid time release from work to develop these essential skills which will enable reps be more effective in their union role. Communicating with their union and members requires good word processing skills to produce letter, report, posters etc. Understanding how to use spreadsheets effectively enable reps to manage project budgets, develop charts and graphs etc to illustrate statistics, and information, develop or track members etc. Using PowerPoint to present information to other union reps, officials and member and their employer professionalises the union reps approach to their union role. More active union reps and union officers may require advanced computer skills to undertake their union tasks – this course is ideally suited to those reps. This course is undertaken through distance learning using online course materials with tutor support via email, telephone and occasionally 1-2-1. You will be given 13hrs tutor support over the entire course. You can start the course at any time and wherever you have access to the internet – or if you down load the course materials from the website you can work through the course offline submitting assignments and your work for your tutor to feedback on. When you have completed a unit you will be given a pre exam assessment test to see if you are ready to take the exam. Once your tutor thinks you are ready to take the exam you will arrange a date to come into the college to sit the exam.
The course syllabus focuses on the IT applications that employers most seek their IT User staff to have knowledge and skills of.

Are there any additional costs associated with this course? There is no expectation to purchase course books as these will be accessible online. The centre has a licence to provide these materials online in PDF but is NOT permitted to sell the materials, which can be purchased from book shops. However, learners registered on this course can download the online materials and print off 1 hard copy for reference purposes.
Ideally you will have access to a computer with software similar the applications they will be studying - Microsoft Office 2007 and adequate security protection. Although this is not essential as you can access the college learning centre to practice skills learnt. Learning sytyles Flexible learning can be done online through college’s online site. All exams will be taken at the college U-Net learning centre
Learners are able to visit the learning centre as a drop-in to seek support or to work on their practice. Alternatively learners can email or phone their tutor for support. AssessmentLearners will need to develop portfolios of evidence of their learning for each of the unit. These will be assessed by your tutor and submitted for internal and external moderation, which if successful will gain the NOCN level 3 qualification. The course requires up to 350hrs of learning which will be a combination of course attendance, tutor directed and self study undertaken distance learning. The course consists of 3 subject units and 4 study skills units. Course participants will be encouraged to progress their study skills to gain a level 2 qualification in literacy & numeracy however, this is not mandatory. The majority of the study skills will be undertake and achieved through distance learning self study, however, study skills workshops will be available if reps would benefit from them. Course participants will require computer skills in work processing, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentation software – we have opportunities for reps to gain these skills & achieve additional IT qualification at any time prior to the course or during it, otherwise workshops will be made available if reps will benefit from this.
