Governance - An Introduction
Southampton City College Corporation is the body corporate of Southampton City College. The Corporation Board of Governors is made up of 15 Members which include the Principal, one Staff Member and 2 Student Members. The 11 “External Members” are drawn from local business and employers, the local council, community, church, local secondary schools, and universities.
The main business of the Corporation is to determine the strategic direction of the College and to oversee its activities in meeting this direction. This is achieved by the roles defined in its Articles of Government which are to:
- Determine the educational character and mission of the college and the oversight of its activities
- Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources, the solvency of the college and the safeguarding of its assets
- Approve annual estimates of income and expenditure
- Oversee the appointment, grading, suspension, dismissal, and the determination of pay and conditions of senior post holders and the clerk to the governing body
- Set a framework for the pay and conditions of service of all other staff
- Approve the strategy for quality
