Commemorating 60 years of changing lives through education

The Queen may be celebrating her diamond jubilee this year but a college in Southampton is following in her footsteps as it also celebrates its 60th anniversary.

City College Southampton held a black tie dinner last night (June 18) to ring in six decades of changing lives through education.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the event, held within the college's £34m hub building, by Dame Mary Fagan DCVO JP, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire.

Other guests at the event included the college's board and directors, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton Councillor Derek Burke and those involved in education from across the region.

Lindsey Noble, Principal and CEO of City College, said: "City College has stood firm in the centre of Southampton for 60 years and has played an important part in the lives and careers of so many. It was wonderful to be joined by guests at this event to celebrate and reflect on the successes that have taken place over this time."

The dinner also gave students a chance to showcase their skills. Catering and hospitality student chefs created, prepared and served the evening's food and learners from the college's City Horizons programme performed alongside staff as part of the City Horizons Action Singers group.
