Engineering students play a part in Southampton’s new landmark

Engineering students from City College made their mark on Southampton when they designed and created a new weathervane for the city this summer.

Using the skills they had learnt in their studies, the budding engineers put their expertise to good use and designed and fabricated a new weathervane to mark a multi-million pound refurbishment in Regents Park Road.

The symbolic new feature, which indicates wind direction, was proudly erected in the presence of the Mayor of Southampton.

The students' success in the project is further proof of Ofsted's recent report on the college, which said that it found the breadth of provision in engineering at City College Southampton is outstanding.

Principal and CEO, Lindsey Noble, said: "The students worked incredibly hard on this project and this is evident in the fantastic end result, which now stands proudly in the city. Our links with local businesses, organisations and projects has yet again benefitted our students, who were able to add to their CVs and practical skills by working on a real-life project."
