New Horizons for successful students

More than 500 young people from in and around Southampton are looking to a new horizon thanks to help from City College Southampton.

 

And last night (June 12) scores of those students came together to celebrate their successes at the City Horizons annual awards evening.

 

City Horizons, run by City College, helps young people who may have found educational success hard to come by in the past. The programme works with young people, their parents and others who support them to ensure they develop the skills needed to move on to further training, an apprenticeship or employment.

So far this year City Horizons has helped more than 500 young people get back on track and Tuesday's event celebrated their achievements.

Among those who scooped special awards on the evening was Nicole Jones, who received the On The Right Track award, after completing her level one beauty course at City College. Tutors described her as "a pleasure to teach". Nicole is hoping to progress onto level two next year.

Mohammed Alizadeh was the recipient of the Excellence in Learning award. Despite struggling with a language barrier Mohammed has excelled in his motor vehicle course. Mohammed said although the course was hard work he has enjoyed learning new skills and meeting new people.

 

Adding a musical flavour to the evening, the City Horizons Action Singers put on a performance.

Also honored at the event were organisations such as Southampton City Council, Job Centre Plus, Cutting Edge Salon, Pride of The South Barbers, Sainsburys, Lloyds TSB and Capita, which were given recognition for their support of City Horizons.

 

The award for Making a Positive Contribution was presented to a group of business students for their work with Capita. They produced a charity Sports Relief day raising £184 in total. Justine Taylor, Business Manager at Capita, said: "I couldn't have asked for more from the students."

 

Ninety two per cent of students who started a programme of learning with City Horizons this year stayed to the end of their courses - higher than the national average for students of this age and level.
