Adult Learners’ Week Events Inspire Creativity at City College LRC

A chance for students to meet author Steve Voake was the main event at the Learning Centre's Adult Learners' Week celebrations in May 2012. Steve, who hails from near Wells, Somerset gave a lively and inspiring talk to an audience of adult learners and their tutors and an interview with Senior Learning Centre Assistant, Alice Martin in the college TV studio. The author of novels and short stories for children and young adults such as The Dreamwalker's Child, The Starlight Conspiracy and Hooey Higgins Goes for Gold, talked about his journey from being a Headteacher of a school in Somerset to being a published author. He also recited some of his work and described how he came up with his ideas for stories.
The Learning Centre also hosted a creative arts event in collaboration with the Southampton Scrapstore where students had the opportunity to decorate book bags in a theme of their choosing using recycled materials, fabric and ribbon donated by local businesses to the charity. For more information about the Southampton Scrapstore and the work they do in the local community please see the website http://www.southamptonscrapstore.org.uk/
