Access to Higher Education
Think you've missed your opportunity to go to University? Don't believe you can get the qualifications necessary to apply? Think university is beyond reach? Can't afford it?
Think Again
The brilliant news is that it may not cost as much as you think. If you haven't gained a full Level 2 qualification (equivalent to 5 GCSE A-C grades) or a Level 3 (AS/A2 level, as long as you are aged 19-24) then you may not have to pay tuition fees, however some costs will be payable. We will advise and assist you to make your journey to University worry-free.
Access courses at City College provide an opportunity for adult learners without sufficient qualifications to apply to university. The courses aim to develop study skills, build confidence and allow you to experience different subject areas within your chosen pathway to prepare you for study at university.
It is possible to gain your qualifications in 7 months (intensive course), one year (daytime course) or two years (evening course).
Options for study
The day course is run from September to June each year and consists of 13 hours per week at college plus private study. The intensive day course is suited for the more confident and independent learner and completed over 12 months.
You can choose from the following day options:
- Access to Health Professions
- Access to Social and Political Studies
- Access to Teaching
The intensive course starts in December and assumes that students already have some qualifications or recent study experience.
The evening course runs over two years. Students may start their course in either September or February. You can choose from the following evening options:
- Access to Health Professions
- Access to Social and Political Studies
- Access to Teaching
You can apply for an Access to Higher Education course at any time of the year. You will initially be invited to complete an application form and a written test and should an Access course be suitable for you, you will be invited for an interview.
