About the course:
There are three types of courses for adult learners with learning difficulties:
Towards Independence
The Towards Independence course is a two days a week and is designed for young adults with learning difficulties who want to become more independent, or want to get a job.
It is on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30am until 3:30pm.
There are fees for this course which are described below in the additional information section.
Basic Skills
The Basic Skills courses are one day a week and are designed for adults with learning difficulties who want to improve their skills in numeracy (Maths) and literacy (English).
There are three different Basic Skills courses:
Basic Skills through Projects, which is on a Monday from 9:30am until 3:30pm.
Basic Skills through Art, which is on a Thursday from 9:30am until 3:30pm.
Basic Skills through ICT, which is on a Friday from 9:30am until 3:30pm.

Leisure Programme
This course is learning through creative activities for one day per week over 34 weeks.
There are fees for this course which are described below in the additional information section.
Support is available for all the courses with a learning support assistant in every session.
Course Content:
Towards Independence
This course will enable you to:
- Look after your home and yourself
- Use public transport
- Find your way around your community
- Use your leisure time
- Use technology in your home
- Keep safe and healthy
- Identify your skills and job options
- Fill out application forms
- Identify how to keep a job
- Create a CV
- Develop your communication skills
- Develop your personal presentation skills
- Improve your reading, writing and number skills
Basic Skills
On the course you may learn how to:
- Follow instructions
- Talk to others
- Read and Write
- Use money
- Tell the time
- Make choices
- Take care of belongings
- Use computers and cameras
- Keep safe
- Take part in activities
Entry Requirements/Qualifications:
Towards Independence
All learners need to be assessed at Milestone 7 to Entry 2 and want to become more independent, or want to get a job.
Basic Skills
All learners need to be assessed at Milestone 7 to Entry 2 and want to improve their skills in Maths and English.
Assessment:
The Course is assessed by your tutor. You may do short tests.
You will have an individual learning plan which you and your tutor use to write down what you have learnt.
The skills are mapped to the National Curriculum Framework.
Progression:
You may be able to progress onto another of our adult courses, or move into a mainstream basic skills course.
Additional Information:
You will be expected to pay for the cost of the materials you use e.g. paints eggs, clay, etc.
You may need to pay extra if you go on visits.
Towards Independence
The resources fee for the year is £210 so, with the college admin fee of £20, the total cost of the Towards Independence course is £230.
Basic Skills Through Project, Art or ICT
The resources fee for the year is £190 so, with the college admin fee of £20, the total cost of the Basic Skills course is £210.
Leisure Programme - Learning Through Creative Activities for One Day a Week (34 weeks)
The course fee is £1,180 so, with the college admin fee of £20, the total cost of the Basic Skills course is £1,200

You will have an assessment so you can decide what you want to learn.
You will be offered a course which will teach you the skills you have chosen.
