About the course:
The £20 student registration fee is not applicable to trade union reps courses
Trade union reps are entitled to seek paid time release from work to develop these essential skills which will enable reps be more effective in their union role. Communicating with their union and members requires good word processing skills to produce letter, report, posters etc. Understanding how to use spreadsheets effectively enable reps to manage project budgets, develop charts and graphs etc to illustrate statistics, and information, develop or track members etc. Using PowerPoint to present information to other union reps, officials and member and their employer professionalises the union reps approach to their union role.
This course covers content similar to the ECDL Extra level 2 course. It is undertaken through distance learning using online course materials with tutor support via email, telephone and occasionally 1-2-1. You can start the course at any time and be given 8hrs tutor support over the entire course.
The course will be achieved by developing a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that you have met the course learning outcomes. If you would like to gain the ECDL Extra level 2 qualification then you can opt to take the BCS Exams – there will be a BCS exam fee for this. You can discuss this with your tutor.
Course Content:
What skills will be learnt?
Word-processing - This unit helps learners develop their ability to create word-processed documents, entering text, editing and formatting work and using graphs, tables and pictures for a professional finish. The learner will also understand how to work more effectively using tools such as the spell-checker and mail merge.
Spreadsheet software - This unit helps learners develop a working knowledge of spreadsheets from entering data and formatting worksheets through to creating charts and producing high quality documents.
Presentation software – This unit introduces the learner to this important means of business communication. Upon completion, learners will be capable of producing high quality presentations using a variety of tools including charts, graphs and drawn objects
Improving Productivity Using IT - The ITQ requires the inclusion of content that builds the learners ability to work more effectively with IT. This unit looks at using tools to help save time and effort when producing word-processed documents, presentations and spreadsheets.
Entry Requirements/Qualifications:
Who is the course suitable for?
This course is for any type of union rep that:
- already have a level 1 ICT qualification or have level 1 knowledge of the ECDL units
- would like to top-up their IT knowledge and skills and gain a level 2, ECDL qualification
- is self motivated and committed to completing the course within 7 months if not before
- is committed to studying for a minimum of 4hrs each week on the course; and
- is committed to completing the course
Learning Style:
This distance learning course is a self study course supported by online learning materials, additional practice assignments provided by your tutor. There will be pre exam assessments if you opt to take the BCS exams.
Can I gain additional support if needed?
Reps are able to visit the learning centre as a drop-in to seek support or to work on their practise. Alternatively they can phone the u-net learning centre for support. Details of the learning centres opening times and contact details for support will be given on enrolment to the course.
Equipment Requirements:
Ideally you will have access to a computer with software similar the applications you will be studying – Microsoft Windows 2007 and adequate security protection. Although this is not essential as you can access the college learning centre to practise skills learnt.
Assessment:
Tutor assess portfolio. The ECDL Extra qualification consists of 4 units - each unit will be assessed by a time controlled (45min) online exam if you choose to take the BCS exams
Progression:
Learners completing the ECDL Extra level 2 course can progress to:
- e-type – this course is an online course helping you develop effective keyboard skills
- fee UK online learning – internet banking, using the internet, buying on line safely – to access this learning you will need to contact Alicja her details are below
- any other level 2 IT application
- BCS level 2 databases course, which is a good introduction to databases creation & for use in preparation for the ECDL Advanced course and/or
- ECDL Advanced, Level 3 course. The units in the ECDL Advanced course include Word-Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentations and Improving Productivity using IT
Additional Information:
What should learners bring to the first class?
Students should always bring a notebook and pens. A USB memory stick would also be of use to save files created in class and to download practice files.
