About the course:

This course is designed for technical students who have achieved the National Diploma in Hospitality or equivalent level 3 qualification and wish to progress into Higher Education. It is delivered part time (one afternoon/evening per week) over 2 years and equates to the first third of a Degree programme.

 

The course is ideal for those aspiring managers in the hospitality industry who want to take the plunge into higher education but with a strong vocational, industry-led curriculum. Students may come straight from further education, hold a relevant BTEC National programme or be progressing from an Advanced Apprenticeship. Alternatively students may come direct from industry with appropriate industry experience.

Michael Collier

Michael spent two years at City College studying to become a manager in the hospitality industry. His studies have been successful and he is now working as a trainee manager for Compass, the largest catering organisation in the world. To start with Michael will be working locally in a supervisory role in the restaurant of one of the high street department stores. Naturally he hopes to move to other areas of Compass and fulfil his other ambition of seeing other parts of the world.


Course Content:

The BTEC (Edexcel) HNC is an 8-unit qualification of which there are 3 core units. Many of the units will improve your abilities in general management skills, e.g. human resources, marketing, small business enterprise etc, other units are focused specifically on the hospitality industry, including work-based experience conference and banqueting management, and food and beverage operations.


Entry Requirements/Qualifications:

A relevant Level 3 qualification, such as BTEC L3 Hospitality, and GCSE English and Maths at grade C or Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2. Adult learners who have not been in education recently can gain entry via interview and demonstration of relevant work experience and or equivalent qualifications. Individual cases where the minimum grade is not achieved may still gain access via an entry interview and skills test.

Application is by application, short essay and interview.


Learning Style:

A range of learning facilities both formal and informal are available, together with a VLE (virtual learning environment) system allowing students to access course work and assignments from home.


Equipment Requirements:

Protective clothing will be needed for work in kitchens and appropriate restaurant uniform for work in the Aspire restaurant.


Assessment:

Assessment criteria are matched to a series of assignments issued throughout the year. These include and encourage the opportunity for higher grade achievement.


Progression:

This qualification forms half of the new HND (Higher National Diploma Level 5). It is our intention to sequentially offer the further 8 units required for this qualification, which will then equate to two thirds of a Degree. It may be possible to obtain the full HND within 4 years.
