About the course:

This is a course that would particularly benefit those with a desire to work in technical theatre or stage management.

 

Run by tutors with a wealth of industry experience, it will provide you with a high level of skills and practical experience in a range of production and technical theatre disciplines.

 

You will gain valuable hands-on skills by working as technical staff within our own 240-seat commercial hub theatre and also provide technical external events in Southampton and further afield.

 

We have contact with a number of local theatres including The Mayflower, Nuffield Theatre, Kings Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, Ferneham Hall, The Point and the Theatre Royal – which can provide opportunities for additional work experience.

 

Course duration:

HNC in Technical Theatre & Stage Management - 1 year (2 days per week)

HND in Technical Theatre & Stage Management - 1 year (2 days per week)

You will be expected to study / rehearse for approximately 12 hours per week in your own time.


Course Content:

The programme of study explores a range of units including:

  • Sound
  • Lighting
  • Rigging
  • Stage management
  • Research skills
  • Professional practice

Entry Requirements/Qualifications:
  • BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in an appropriate discipline
  • A-level profile which demonstrate strong performance in a relevant subject
  • Level 3 qualification in technical theatre or other relevant subject
  • Those with extensive work experience (paid or voluntary) in the theatre or events sector will also be considered

Learning Style:

This is a practical course with approximately 30% written work.


Assessment:

You will be assessed through a range of practical and written tasks, assignments, and project presentations that are designed to develop professional practice and knowledge relevant to the theatre industry. There are no interim or final exams.


Progression:
  • HND or degree level course in technical theatre
  • Progress straight into employment
  • Career development
