About the course:
This is the first year of a two year HND qualification in Technical Theatre and Stage Management.
City College wants you to exceed your expectations by delivering outstanding teaching and learning in a state of the art new building, the hub.
Whether you are continuing your studies here, or returning to education to further your career, an HNC/HND offers you a flexible approach to education.
Financially an HNC/HND is a far more cost effective than a degree. Given the high level of attainment set for the qualification, it is also considered that a HNC/HND will enable learners to go straight into employment.
In September of 2011, the department will offer the Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma in Performing Arts (Theatre and Event Management), providing a university level qualification enhanced by a wide range of practical training and experience.
We work closely with a number of local theatres including The Mayflower, Nuffield Theatre, King’s Theatre (Portsmouth), Chichester Festival Theatre, Ferneham Hall (Fareham), The Point (Eastleigh) and the Theatre Royal (Winchester). Students act as technical staff within our own Hub Theatre. Students also provide technical support for local schools in Southampton and further afield.
You will study through a mix of workshop and practical sessions in a studio environment and class-based studies using lectures, tutorials and seminars. A substantial proportion of the practical sessions involve performance work which will include development, production, direction and participation. In addition, you will be required to submit assignments in the form of written work such as essays, projects and presentations.
You will study 6 units that cover sound, lighting, rigging, stage management, research and professional practice
You will also develop and enhance a whole range of personal skills that will support your wider personal development. These include: problem-solving; self confidence; teamwork; time management and planning; giving presentations; IT, written and verbal communication skills.
A relevant Level 3 qualification, i.e BTEC Extended Diploma or A levels in a related subject.
Mature students, or those already employed in the industry may gain entry on completion of a successful interview and presentation of a portfolio.
This is a practical course with approximately 50% written work
Students will be assessed by assignments relevant to the performing arts industry. There are no written exams
Successful completion will allow progression to the HND.
The wider, transferable skills which you learn on the course will also support your personal and professional development in a whole range of related professions.
