Art and Design
Higher - HNC
About the course:
City College wants you to exceed your expectations by delivering outstanding teaching and learning by practitioners of the arts.
Whether you are continuing your studies here, returning to education to further your career, or an employer looking to upskill your staff, an HNC/HND offers you a flexible approach.
This is a course that would particularly benefit those with a desire to work in the Creative Arts industry or are currently working within the profession. The course structure is designed to develop the skills and confidence necessary for either vocational or educational progression. You will work within a well structured area of delivery and group development, but will also be encouraged to develop individual practice. You will, of course, be fully supported throughout your time with us, but will also be expected to work and study autonomously in order to gain personal inspiration for your projects.
The aims of the course are to encourage and nurture creative and technical skills in those with a desire to learn skills and knowledge related to Art and Design with a view to progression onto higher education or employment within the field. Prior knowledge will be assessed and existing strengths built on as you develop new skills as the course progresses. Should you wish to progress to further study within HE, your tutors will assist you to produce a portfolio of work for this purpose. The course provides a solid grounding in the disciplines required for effective creative practice including opportunities to work with more traditional design methods, drawing, painting, textiles, fashion, photography, printing, graphics and sculpture/3D methods. You will later be given the opportunity to demonstrate your abilities in a range of techniques, skills and areas of work in a chosen ‘preference’ of Art and Design.
The course will culminate in an exhibition which will give you the opportunity to showcase your work in a professional setting to the public, local employers and HE institutions.
Financially an HNC/HND is a far more cost effective than a degree. Given the high level of attainment set for the qualification, it is also considered that a HNC/HND in Art and Design will enable learners to go straight into employment.
