About the course:

A half-day course on identification of common defects in GRP mouldings and how to assess the possible causes; future prevention and repair options. This course is from SEMTA Marine Engineering Level 3 Unit No 151.6: Identifying defects in marine components and assemblies.


Course Content:
  • Gel coat wrinkling
  • Gel coat blisters including osmosis
  • Thin gel coat
  • Flaking and peeling gel coat
  • Star cracking and crazing
  • Delamination
  • Distortion
  • Under and over cure, and testing using a barcol hardener tester
  • Shrinkage and exotherm
  • Poor rigidity or stiffness
  • Corner voids
  • Colour leaching

Entry Requirements/Qualifications:

The course is suited for students who need to carry out inspection checks on mouldings to ensure quality standards are maintained, and detail repair procedures for identified defects.
