About the CourseThe Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of people, enabling them to work in their industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification. Entry RequirementsMinimum entry requirements for the course are GCSE grades C/D English and Maths, or relevant equivalent qualifications. (Practical qualifications may also be considered as an alternative entry depending on grade achieved). Course allocation is subject to a good achievement and attendance report from school (if school leaver) and a successful interview in college demonstrating interest and commitment to study. AssessmentAchievement of each unit by internal testing undertaken by the trainer. Each knowledge unit also has a mandatory series of questions and answers produced by CAA and managed by the trainer. Synoptic practical assignment set by CAA and controlled by the trainer. Successful completion of the assignment will be needed before the qualification can be completed. Online test covering the core units and the occupational units must be passed to achieve the qualification. The test will be an independent test of knowledge and understanding. ProgressionOn successful completion of the course, students could seek employment in Bricklaying companies in both the private and public sectors, Alternative from this programme candidates may also progress on to NVQ’s or other Level 3 courses to further develop their skills and gain employment in supervisory, management or technical support roles. Either way you will need to be employed and able to put together a portfolio of evidence to show you are competent within painting and decorating. This is a course for tradesmen who are employed and seeking a qualification or learners in work interested in getting training to enable themselves to prove their competent. There are a number of ways this qualification can be completed, either through On Site Assessment and Training (OSAT) who are working in Industry for at least five years. College evening classes and assessment or the Experienced worker Practical Assessment. (EWPA) On site assessment and training (OSAT) route can be used for trades people with a minimum of Five years trade experience. The Experienced Worker Practical Assessment Route (EWPA) can be achieved in Painting and Decorating as a stand alone NVQ Level 2. It's unique and a highly flexible way to achieve an NVQ L2 in one or two days depending on the craft area. It's generally open to highly experienced trades people who have and still are working in the Industry who are yet to have gained a level two qualification. About the CourseThis is a course for tradesmen who are employed and seeking a qualification. Course ContentYou will recieve input on the areas where you require training.You will then be required to complete a portfolio of eveidence to confirm competance. OSAT (On-Site Assessment and Training) is another route to gaining an NVQ that is available to workers who are already experienced but do not have formal qualifications. Regular college attendance is not required and you can start at any time after your interview. You will build up a portfolio of evidence with your Tutor who will also visit your workplace to assess your work. Entry RequirementsExperience of Carpentry and Joinery with a reasonable standard of education is required. About the CourseCity and Guilds Level 2 Diploma (6188-30) This is a new diploma replacing the old City and Guilds 6088 NVQ and 6128 Technical Certificate schemes where the NVQ and underpinning knowledge are now combined into one qualification under the new QCF framework. There are 8 mandatory units and 1 optional unit to be completed to achieve the required 57 credits for the qualification. Each of the units is made up of outcomes, ranging from 4 to 12, which include knowledge statements (state, identify ...) and practical performance (demonstrate, perform ...) which must be completed to achieve the unit criteria. This course is divided over 2 years, with Manual Metal Arc pipe welding being the chosen option. Course ContentUnit 301 – Understand how to organise resources within BSE (3 credits) This unit is based on the paperwork that is required when ‘running’ a small contract and/or a part of a large site where knowledge is required in risk assessments, method statements, site responsibilities, variation orders, ordering of materials.............
Unit 302 - Understand electrical work on Industrial/Commercial systems or components (12 credits) This unit is based on the knowledge required to work safely on electrical supplies and its safe isolation with some basic knowledge that could be required when working alongside an electrician.
Unit 303 - Understand Industrial/Commercial cold water system installation and pre-commissioning techniques. (5 credits) This unit is based on reviewing the basic systems learnt at Level 2 and the introduction of boosted cold water systems within a building.
Unit 304 - Understand Industrial/Commercial hot water system installation and pre-commissioning techniques (5 credits) This unit is based on reviewing the basic systems learnt at Level 2 and the introduction of an unvented hot water system within a building.
Unit 305 - Understand Industrial/Commercial heating system installation and pre-commissioning techniques (5 credits) This unit is based on reviewing the basic systems learnt at Level 2 and the introduction of sealed systems with high/medium temperature pressurised systems within a building.
Unit 306 - Understand Industrial/Commercial chilled water system installation and pre-commissioning techniques (5 credits) This unit is based on the installation chilled water systems within a building alongside the different installation practices that must be used.
Unit 307 – Understand the principles and requirements of Industrial/Commercial fuel systems (12 credits) This unit is based on the knowledge required across gas and oil based fuels and the installation requirements with an industrial/ commercial context.
Unit 308 - Install Industrial/Commercial pipework and systems (3 credits) This unit is carried out in the workplace as evidence of the work you have completed via reports and site visits.
Unit 314 – Perform Industrial/Commercial manual metal arc pipe welding (7 credits) This is the optional unit where the skill of welding will be taught and assessed. Success StoryThis is a new course for the year 11/12 and all students are currently on target and have 100% pass marks on all completed exams. (to date) Entry RequirementsYou will need to be employed within the Heating and Ventilation or Plumbing industry as an apprentice or adult trainee to be on this course. The qualifications required for entry onto the course – minimum of 3 GCSE’s C grades in Maths, English and a Science or the equivalent in adult literacy or numeracy and a Level 2 qualification in Industrial/Commercial Installation. Learning StyleThere are no particular learning styles that are formally required for the course but a willingness to learn at a level that will lead onto site supervision. Equipment RequirementsTo conform the requirements of working within a ‘high risk’ industry for accidents, you are required to supply and wear within all workshop and assessment sessions the following - Steel toe capped boots or shoes Flame resistant overalls

All other PPE will be supplied when required especailly when oxy/acetylene flame cutting and grinding. AssessmentThe assessment of knowledge will be by assignment and/or Evolve multiple choice exams, with practical competence by assessment of work within a set portfolio of tasks supplied by City and Guilds. The welding option will contain training welds alongside a final weld test to TR5. The passing of this test will give a 1 year provisional weld certificate, which is recognised as the industry minimum requirement for a welding certification/qualification. ProgressionThere is the opportunity for progression onto a Btec National Certificate and possibiliy onto a Btec Higher National Certificate qualification upon completion of this course, where the role of a junior engineer is expected to be the progressional route. About the CourseThe BTEC Diploma in Construction is a two year part time attended qualification that is designed to meet the needs of adult learners who are either working in the construction industry or are considering a career change. Attendance is one day/week over 34 weeks/year. The course offers candidates three construction pathways: Construction, Civil Engineering and Building Services Engineering. All three pathways entail studying six units over the first year; four units are generic to all pathways whilst the remaining two units are specific to the candidates’ pathway chosen. About the CourseThis course is offered on an open learning supported tutorial-basis for those of you currently working in supervisory positions within the industry. It is designed for people wishing to formalise their experience and gain a widely recognised qualification. Following an initial guidance session, you will attend regular meetings with a tutor who will guide you through the assessment preparation. In addition, you will attend college sessions for approximately one session every three weeks. The course is designed for site managers who are usually in charge of on-site building / civil engineering work within a wider team of managers and functional specialists such as designers, planners, quantity surveyors, engineers etc. The site manager is usually responsible for the effective use of resources such as materials, plant, labour and sub-contractors. Evidence of considerable organisational, managerial and technical abilities is required and the ability to quickly establish and maintain good, effective relationships with people is required to achieve this NVQ. Entry RequirementsYou are required to have gained experience at an appropriate level. This qualification usually follows NVQ 3 achievement in Construction Site Supervision / Building / Civil Engineering.
