The Hairdressing industry is a diverse and varied career which can lead to challenging and rewarding job opportunities, whether this is in top leading salons, session stylist working back stage for catwalk and fashion shows across the world or travelling the globe aboard cruise liners.

As part of the fashion industry, individuals are required to have artistic flare, creative ambition and the determination to succeed.

Barbering has become a popular career choice for those who wish to enter the hairdressing industry with a specialised qualification.

It is practical based qualification which includes theory to underpin knowledge and complete all relevant on-line exams.  Your tutors are professional with qualifications and experience within the hairdressing industry. They will help you to practice your new skills on each other, training heads and with clients in our newly built salons which are open to the general public as well as staff and students. The qualification will give you the skills to be able to be confident in cutting gents hair and facial hair including shaping and trimming along with clipper cutting skills and more edgy modern gent’s hairdressing techniques.

VRQ s are vocationally related qualifications that match the relevant skills needed in the sector at the various levels. VRQ's are developed jointly by awarding bodies and sector skills council.

Course Content

To get this qualification, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You will work with your us to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

Qualifications are made up of individual units which covers different areas of your work as a Barber.

You complete 4 core units:

• Working in the hair industry
• Follow health and safety in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp.

You also choose optional units (usually 2-4) from:

• Promote products and services to clients in a salon
• Colour and lighten hair
• Perm and neutralise hair
• Cut men's hair
• Cut facial hair
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
• The art of colouring
• Scalp massage
• Salon reception duties
• Styling men's hair.

Success Story

Katherine Boyt studied here at City College to gain NVQ Level 2 Barbering and has now successfully gained employment in a renowned barbering salon she has also entered various competitions’ and is working to an exceptionally high standard.  Katherine has now also gained her Level 3 in Barbering and is working towards her assessing qualifications which will help steer her towards a career in Education allowing her to pass on her knowledge and experience to others.

Entry Requirements

The theory side of this course requires a good standard of English A - D GCSE and students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL at  level 1, this is due to the course containing a high level of written evidence with assignments, written questions and test papers.  Ideally some previous work experience or qualification (e.g.NVQ or Certificate at Level 1 or 2 in Hairdressing or equivalent) assisting with the practical side of this course.

It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding and is not suitable for some skin conditions. It would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.

Learning Style

The necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations these will include working in our commercial salon Kudos.

Theory lessons are taught through a variety of methods from classroom, independent study, online resources through our Visual Learning Environment VLE.

Equipment Requirements

We strive to source the best value kits for all our Hairdressing courses September 2011 prices were at £85.00.  The kit itself contains everything you will need to embark on a career in Barbering.There is a charge of £30.00 for consumables to be paid at the first session on the course.

Due to health and Safety regulations all students are required to purchase and wear in all practical sessions a full uniform which consists of the following: Tunic, Trousers and closed toed shoes.  Please note that these are purchased through the college suppliers to ensure a high standard of presentation in Kudos Hair and Beauty Salons.

Assessment

To get an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

VRQ qualifications are assessed at work or in a realistic working environment. For each unit your assessor observes you carrying out different services and checks your understanding, this information will be recorded in your log book, which then provides formal evidence of your learning.

For a Barbering VRQ, you will do hairdressing practice, learn the knowledge required and organise your own study - you'll record your achievements in a logbook packed with hints and tips from industry experts.

You might also do online courses, quizzes and games from our Virtual Learning Environment.

Progression

A Barbering qualification will enable you to seek employment within the Hairdressing Industry, and with the higher levels you could become a top stylist and go on to be a salon manager or travel the world.

To run your own salon or specialise in particular hair types or hairdressing treatments, you might want to think about these other qualifications too:

NVQ/VRQ Level 2 in Barbering

NVQ/VRQ Level 3 in Barbering

• Level 3 Certificates and Diplomas in Hairdressing - update and learn new skills and techniques
• Higher Professional Certificate / Diploma in Technical Salon Management - the skills to run your own hair salon.

Additional Information

If you are on a qualifying means tested benefit, the tuition fees for some courses may be reduced.  However, you will still need to pay Exam and College costs.  You must claim tuition fee remission by providing evidence before enrolment.

Enrolment Instructions

This course is designed for over 19’s.  Ideally all applications require a good standard of education in English, Maths and Science or the equivalent, or candidates who have successfully completed a Level 1 Beauty course with a satisfactory reference and skills assessment. Learner from the EU or who have been previous ESOL students will require a good standard of spoken English so they can hold a conversation with our wide client base. 

It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as beauty is often physically demanding, and this type of work may affect certain skin conditions.

A short interview is required by every learners before starting this course.

Optional Group 1:

• Provide shaving services
• Provide face massage services
• Design and create patterns in hair
• Colour hair using a variety of techniques
• Provide colour correction services
• Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
• Create a variety of permed effects.

Optional Group 2:

• Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
• Support client service improvements
• Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
