About the CourseThe Hairdressing industry is a diverse and varied career and rewarding job opportunities, whether this is in top leading salons, session stylist working back stage for catwalk and fashion shows across the world or travelling the globe aboard cruise liners. As part of the fashion industry, individuals are required to have artistic flare, creative ambition and the determination to succeed. This award is about being creative and modern when trimming and redesigning moustaches and beards. Within this unit you will gain skills and knowledge about different facial designs and will learn how to create a variety of looks. This course will put your talent and skills to the test and you never know you may end up designing the next fashion trend in cutting facial hair. This course can be offered as a bespoke course within the workplace Course ContentTo gain this award, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You will work with your us to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying. You will cover the following:
Success StoryKerry Clow January 2012 Has studied here at City College as a full time student studying her NVQ Level 2 and 3 in hairdressing. Kerry is now working in a local salon which required her to gain some barbering qualifications, she has recently achieved the following qualifications on our short courses successfully gaining Awards in both Cutting Mens Hair and Cutting facial hair to create a variety of looks. Entry RequirementsThere are no formal entry requirements for students wanting to undertake these qualifications. A Barbering qualification will enable you to seek employment within the Hairdressing Industry, and with the higher levels you could become a top stylist and go on to be a salon manager or travel the world. To run your own salon or specialise in particular hair types or hairdressing treatments, you might want to think about these other qualifications too:
Learning StyleThe necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations these will include working in our commercial salon Kudos. Theory lessons are taught through a variety of methods from classroom, independent study, online resources through our Visual Learning Environment VLE. Equipment RequirementsYou will be required to wear a uniform consisting of black trousers, black top and black closed shoes to all practical sessions and will need to purchase a barbering hairdressing kit for the practical assessments.
AssessmentTo get an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying. To gain an award you will be assessed at work or in a realistic working environment. For each unit your assessor observes you carrying out different services and checks your understanding, this information will be recorded in your log book, which then provides formal evidence of your learning. For an Award, you'll do shaving practice, learn the knowledge required and organise your own study - you'll record your achievements in a logbook packed with hints and tips from industry experts. You might also do online courses, quizzes and games from our Virtual Learning Environment. About the CourseThis course is a short course , which will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to cut breards and moustaches to creat a variety of looks. The knowledge acquired by the learner will enable them to understand how to identify and create a varity of traditional, current and emerging bread and moustache looks. The skills developed by the learner included the use of scissors, clippers and attachments to create a variety of facial hair shapes by scissor over comb, clipper over comb, freehand cutting techniques. You'll learn which face shapes suite different moustaches and beards and how to deal with problems such as areas of less dense facial hair growth. Cutting techniques focus heavily on scissor over comb and clipper over comb, with and without using cutting guards. The course can be offered as a bespoke course within the salon or workplace. The Practical
Entry RequirementsLevel2 Barbering or Hairdressing qualification or appropriate work experience is required for the practical side of the course. The theory side of this course requires a good standard of English A - D GCSE and students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL at level 1, this is due to the course containing a high level of written evidence with assignments, written questions and test papers. It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding and is not suitable for some skin conditions. It would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.
