About the CourseNEBOSH's Certificate-level qualifications give a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities. Who is the course suitable for?nessarily Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study. Course ContentThe NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
Equipment RequirementsAll equipment required for the course is provided by the college. AssessmentUnits NGC1 and NGC2 are taught units each assessed by a two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. Unit NGC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate's own workplace. The assessment must normally be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by the programme organiser and externally moderated by NEBOSH. Candidates will be awarded a unit certificate for each unit passed. Once a candidate has successfully completes all three units (NGC1, NGC2 and NGC3), the overall qualification parchment will be issued. ProgressionThese qualifications are widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and are accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). About the CourseThis is aimed at those who wish to gain insight into Learning Disabilities. It will look at the various types of learning disabilities, numbers and who are affected by various conditions. The care that is provided in a holistic way using person centred approaches is explored. This is for those with little or no background in learning disabilities in care but who may wish to develop their skills to have a career in the care sector. Course ContentLearners will develop their knowledge in the field of Learning Disabilities in the following areas: History of Learning Disabilities; Legislation and Frameworks; Carers and Support Roles; Types of Conditions with causes, signs and symptoms. Benefits and Support available. Learning will be through a range of activities and exercises to develop knowledge and understanding of this subject. Some prefer to read and look at visual material known as visual learners, others will rather listen to spoken words or music that conveys a message. We refer to them as auditory learners. Many learners who want to work in a practical setting are `hands on` or are referred to tactile kinaesthetic learners. Through a simple activity and questionnaire we identify the preferred style and as teachers it informs the way in which we deliver our lessons to encompass all the different learning styles. After all, you may be equally more than one and lessons that underpin knowledge need to appeal to the way in which you learn to maximise your potential to internalise all the information that is presented to you. There are lots of ways to help you including a software programme used here at City College. It is called ClaroRead and it enables you to change the colour of the font, the background, the size of the text and many other features. For those of you who want to proof read your work, there is a function that will read back your work to you! Just one of many exciting ways that we use to help you to learn and retain that information. Equipment RequirementsWriting materials will be required and a folder to store information. The course tutor will provide resources on the day and over the two sessions. Students can also purchase USB Memory Sticks from the College shop if they wish to use laptops. The College has a Wi-Fi system that operates across the Campus. AssessmentThere is no examination and no assignment. You will be asked to evaluate the session for Quality Improvement purposes. Assessment of learning is continuous throughout the learning experience and sharing of experience is valuable particularly among adult learners who have experience in various fields. Equipment RequirementsStudents should bring writing materials although resources are provided for all students who enrol on the programme. USB memory sticks are available to purchase from the College shop. Laptops can be used once the IT department have been informed and a password issued for use of College systems. The College has wi-fi facilities available throughout the campus. We have a small amount of recycled folders that students can request on a first come first serve basis. During the First Aid awareness it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothing i.e. trainers and jogging bottoms. AssessmentThis is a tailored course and learners are continually assessed throughout the four days. It is therefore essential that all four days are completed to enable learners to thoroughly understand all processes and procedures as well as develop their knowledge and understanding. A College Certificate will be issued on completion of the course. ProgressionThe College offers a comprehensive range of learning programmes to suit all levels and needs. Within the Health and Social Care and Early Years Department there is a wide range of programmes that we offer and are continually updating and changing to suit the needs of the industry and the requirements of our long list of satisfied employers. We offer a level 1 programme for those who have not worked in the industry before, have been recently made redundant, are unemployed or are looking for a career change, level 2 for those in the industry who need the diploma for their job role, level 3 for those normally in a supervisory position and level 5 for leadership and management. There will be further courses introduced from the new academic year in September 2012 so please check this site regularly for updates. Interviews are not normally required at level 1. Level 2 applicants need to demonstrate they are either working in the industry or have a regular voluntary position for at least 10 hours a week and level 3 and above must have an interview to satisfy that they meet the criteria and are working in an appropriate role to produce the evidence for an assessor to observe in the workplace. About the CourseThis will be a new course in terms of accreditation by an awarding body - City and Guilds. The aim is to deliver this during the evenings on alternate weeks so the programme can run two sessions back to back. You will learn about key issues with dementia that effect both individuals and their families. Those who complete this programme may be interested in other short courses or longer accredited programmes. Course ContentThere are four mandatory units each accruing 2 credits. The first session will be an Induction where learners can undertake assessment of their literacy and numeracy. An overview of the programme will be given on this first session. Four teaching sessions will follow with a final mop up session on week 6. About the CourseThis course has been devised to respond to the needs of employers who want to have their staff aware in the field of dementia without having to release them from the workplace. It focuses on the essential factors that staff need to be aware of when working with those with dementia. It can be tailored to the needs of the organisation and delivered in-house which reduces time spent away from the residents. Workbooks will be used for this course as learners can undertake independent learning in addition to the underpinning knowledge delivered by the tutor. It can be delivered over several days or extended to a longer period of learning according to the needs of the employee role and responsibilities as well as the organisational needs. Course ContentThe key content for this Bespoke course covers: Understand what dementia is; Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia; Know the most common types of dementia and their causes; Understand factors relating to an individual's experience of dementia. Within this terminology, key functions of the brain and links to depression are explored. Models of dementia are outlined, causes, signs, symptons and risk factors are all discussed. Individual experiences of living with this condition are described and the impact that attitudes and behaviours of others on the individual with dementia will be considered. She is now in her first year studying a nursing programme at the University of Southampton. About the CourseThis qualification is to guide and assess the development of knowledge and skills relating to the health and social care workforce. About the CourseThis course is aimed at those working in the field of Dementia that requires more understanding of the subject. This programme is delivered during an evening session but can also be delivered as a Bespoke course in the workplace setting on request. Both the Award and the Certificate are aimed at a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas across all service user groups and ages, working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies, This would be suitable for anyone aged 16 or older, who have an interst in operating in acaring role for older people. About the CourseThis exiting new qualification can be studied JUST ONE DAY a week for one year. Cost for the course will be £2350.00 for a one year programme. This programme is designed for those who want to develop their knowledge in Health and Social Care. This will enable learners to progress in their organisation and improve their ability to move onto Higher Education. Work experience of at least 200 hours will be expected as a mandatory requirement to pass the course. This can be voluntary or paid work for those already in employment in an appropriately related work area. Learners can fund themselves in a number of ways including a Career Development Loan and Adult Learning through Learn Direct. Information about these schemes is available from the College. Learners are expected to produce a work journal and reflective diary which will need to be completed and signed by an appropriate manager or supervisor from the work setting. Hours will be recorded and monitored through an allocated workplace mentor. There will be a variety of teaching staff who have expertise in different areas to both teach and guide you through the programme. Those candidates who have not been accepted for University this year or who have changed their mind will be considered. This course offers the benefits of HE study whilst allowing the learner to work part time, counting the work experience towards the hours required for this course. We would expect learners to have completed a level 3 programme i.e. BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care with a good result of at least a merit. An A level or 2 AS levels in appropriate subjects will be considered or equivalent qualifications. Ideally candidates should have 5 GCSEs at A-C level or equivalent although more importantly for those who do wish to progress to HE will need to have English and Maths GCSE at C level or above. An interview and screening process will take place during the summer months. An expression of interest can be made to the College and arrangements for interview to be advised. Learning StyleLearning styles determine the best way in which you learn. Some prefer to read and look at visual material known as visual learners, others will rather listen to spoken words or music that conveys a message. We refer to them as auditory learners. Many learners who want to work in a practical setting are `hands on` or are referred to tactile kinaesthetic learners. Through a simple activity and questionnaire we identify the preferred style and as teachers it informs the way in which we deliver our lessons to encompass all the different learning styles. After all, you may be equally more than one and lessons that underpin knowledge need to appeal to the way in which you learn to maximise your potential to internalise all the information that is presented to you. There are lots of ways to help you including a software programme used here at City College. It is called ClaroRead and it enables you to change the colour of the font, the background, the size of the text and many other features. For those of you who want to proof read your work, there is a function that will read back your work to you! Just one of many exciting ways that we use to help you to learn and retain that information. Equipment RequirementsA folder to gather a port folio of evidence which will be required, stationery items and a lap top can be used with our Wi-Fi equipment. All students need to be able to access the Internet outside of their timetabled programme. AssessmentThis is a new programme for academic year 2012 - 13. Learners will need to provide evidence in their portfolios and assessment is continuous. Formative feedback will be given by the tutor and learners can continually improve in their study. There are also strategies in place to help candidates in their learning programmes through a range of software programmes including Claro Read which is detailed in Learning Styles - details about this software available during enrolment. All work is moderated internally and scrutinised by the awarding body for this qualification, Edexcel. They should be responsible for team meetings and supervisions. As this is a unique course which promotes best practice and works at a higher level than previous qualifications, it is essential that candidates are prepared for the commitment of the course and meet the criteria for entry. An interview by a member of the Health and Social Care Team will be required prior to entry to determine the appropriateness of the candidate and to ensure they are working at the right level to undertake this programme of study. Individuals are welcome and Employers who wish their staff to complete the programme in order to meet industry needs. Candidates from differing backgrounds contribute to the richness of the learning experience so those working across all sectors of the health and social care field are encouraged to apply for a place. Learning StyleAll learners will attend an Induction Day in which they will undertake a range of skills tests to determine the level at which they are working and to identify any support needs that they might have. On this day the learners will identify their learning styles - an important tool that assists tutors to differentiate in the learning environment. Some learners prefer conventiional methods of underpinning knowledge delivery which can be visual, auditory or a combination of both. Others may prefer a more practical hands-on approach (tactile/kinaesthetic). There is a software package available on College PCs called Claro read that enables the learner to change colours, size, background, fonts and allows text to be read back for proof reading purposes. If you have a learning difficulty or believe you would benefit from this software please ask the Programme Leader during your interview for more details. Equipment RequirementsAll learners will be required to provide a portfolio of work which will require a lever arch folder and a separate folder for handouts and other resources. Stationery items such as pens, notepads, pencils, erasers, rulers, calculators should be produced by the learner. PCs are provided in the College although personal laptops can be used as there is Wi-Fi facility available. Memory sticks can be purchased from the College shop. AssessmentAll learners are allocated a named assessor on the Induction day. A combination of written work, observations, witness testimonies, oral questions, professional discussion are all used in gathering evidence to culminate in the final qualification. Teaching and assessment works most effectivey with tutor/assessor/employer/learner working in partnership together.
Appointments will be made by assessors on the days when leaners attend College. The structure of the course is such to maximise the time and efforts put in by all concerned. Observations will take place in the work place to assess competence. Knowledge will be tested through a combination of methods including written assignments. ProgressionThese qualifications replace the current Level 4 NVQ in Leadership and Management for Care Services and the Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care, which are accepted as entry requirements to a number of HEI programmes. These qualifications will be the accepted qualification for registration and regulation where appropriate and can demonstrate continuing professional development.
