About the Course

This course is designed for those new to the Care Industry and should be undertaken within the first 12 weeks of employment. The course will be covered in 4 days to address all the key areas of the induction process that meet industry standards. All our staff have considerable industry experience, qualifications and knowledge to deliver this programme particularly to those new to the industry who may have a lot of questions about the content. This will be explored during each day of the programme which addresses the four key areas:

Course Content

Day 1 AM

Personal Development – Overview

• Understand your main duties and responsibilities
• Be aware of standards/codes of practice relating to your work role
• Be aware of how past experiences/personal attitudes may affect the way you work
• Understand the importance of continuous Reflective Practice in improving quality of provision and understanding how to evaluate this
• Importance of literacy, numeracy and communication skills
• Recording your progress and producing your own development plan
• Use of learning opportunities

Role of the Worker - Overview

• Know responsibilities to an individual you support
• Be aware of differences in relationships between you and a service user and all other relationships
• Agreed ways of working with aims and objectives of your service
• Know where to access policies and procedures
• Important of working in partnership with carers, families, advocates and others
• Importance of team work
• Attitudes and ways of working that improve partnerships
• Secure systems, handling, information, reporting, recording, sharing and the Data Protection Act 1998 – ensuring information is accurate and up to date.

Duty of Care - Overview

• Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice
• Safeguarding and protecting individuals
• Dilemmas arising between expression of needs and duty of care
• Managing conflicts and asking for help
• Handling complaints – who to go to
• Recognising adverse events , incidents, errors and near misses

Safeguarding - Overview

• Knowing types of abuse
• Recognising signs and symptoms of abuse and/or neglect
• Being aware of factors that make an individual more vulnerable
• Sources of information linked to your role/responsibilities
• Ways to reduce likelihood of abuse
• Actions to take if abuse or neglect is suspected or a service user makes a disclosure
• Legislation

Day 2 AM

Effective Communication including Reporting and Recording - Overview

• Types of communication – verbal/non-verbal, methods and styles
• Reasons for communication and the effects on relationships
• Individual responses and needs
• Recognising barriers and how to overcome them
• Sources of support
• Confidentiality – when it may be necessary to pass on information

Day 2 PM
Equality and Inclusion - Overview

• Diversity and discrimination – definitions
• How discrimination can occur deliberately or inadvertently
• Valuing equality and inclusion, thereby reducing discrimination and promoting good practice
• Key legislation
• Respecting beliefs, culture, values and preferences
• Challenging discrimination and accessing sources of information
• Person centred values – putting into everyday practice
• Identifying changing needs and planning for future needs

Dementia Awareness - Overview

• Recognising the signs of dementia
• Awareness of why depression and memory loss may be mistaken for dementia
• Importance of early diagnosis and who to report symptoms to
• Supporting using a non-judgemental approach
• Enabling service users to make informed choices
• Active participation in supporting the individual to remain active and self supporting
• Supporting service users to make informed choices and not allowing personal views to influence
• Challenging decisions made for service users by other people
• Promoting spiritual and emotional well being, self esteem and self identity

Day 3 AM

Health and Safety/Infection Control – Overview

• Key legislation – policies/practice linked to own setting
• Roles and responsibilities of you, your line manager and service users you support
• Know your limitations at this stage of your training
• Know where information can be obtained
• Risk Assessment
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (C.O.S.H.H.) – safe practices for storage, usage and disposal
• Infection routes into the body, cross infection, hand hygiene and protective clothing and equipment
• Prevention of infection spreading
• Fire Safety – linked to own place of work
• Security – checking of identity
• Managing Stress
• Reporting of Diseases, Dangerous Occurences (R.I.D.D.O.R.)

Day 3 PM

Manual Handling – Awareness

• Key legislation – moving and positioning
• Accidents reporting

Day 4 AM

Emergency First Aid Awareness

• Key points and overview of working with medication

Day 4 PM

Food Nutrition/Hygiene/Hydration - Overview

• Symptoms and signs of poor nutrition and hydration
• Promoting adequate nutrition and hydration

Entry Requirements

There are no formal requirements for this course.  However, as this is specifically aimed at those working in the Care Industry you would need to be working in a setting to be able to link the content of this underpinning knowledge and practical manual handling activity.  We particularly invite employers to enrol their new employees on this programme as this complies with the industry requirements.

Learning Style

Learning styles determine the best way in which you learn. Some prefer to read and look at visual material known as visual learners, others will rather listen to spoken words or music that conveys a message. We refer to them as auditory learners. Many learners who want to work in a practical setting are `hands on` or are referred to tactile kinaesthetic learners. Through a simple activity and questionnaire we identify the preferred style and as teachers it informs the way in which we deliver our lessons to encompass all the different learning styles. After all, you may be equally more than one and lessons that underpin knowledge need to appeal to the way in which you learn to maximise your potential to internalise all the information that is presented to you. There are lots of ways to help you including a software programme used here at City College. It is called ClaroRead and it enables you to change the colour of the font, the background, the size of the text and many other features. For those of you who want to proof read your work, there is a function that will read back your work to you! Just one of many exciting ways that we use to help you to learn and retain that information.

Equipment Requirements

Students should bring writing materials although resources are provided for all students who enrol on the programme.  USB memory sticks are available to purchase from the College shop.  Laptops can be used once the IT department have been informed and a password issued for use of College systems.  The College has wi-fi facilities available throughout the campus.  We have a small amount of recycled folders that students can request on a first come first serve basis.  During the First Aid awareness it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothing i.e. trainers and jogging bottoms. 

Assessment

This is a tailored course and learners are continually assessed throughout the four days. It is therefore essential that all four days are completed to enable learners to thoroughly understand all processes and procedures as well as develop their knowledge and understanding. A College Certificate will be issued on completion of the course.

Progression

The College offers a comprehensive range of learning programmes to suit all levels and needs. Within the Health and Social Care and Early Years Department there is a wide range of programmes that we offer and are continually updating and changing to suit the needs of the industry and the requirements of our long list of satisfied employers. We offer a level 1 programme for those who have not worked in the industry before, have been recently made redundant, are unemployed or are looking for a career change, level 2 for those in the industry who need the diploma for their job role, level 3 for those normally in a supervisory position and level 5 for leadership and management. There will be further courses introduced from the new academic year in September 2012 so please check this site regularly for updates. Interviews are not normally required at level 1. Level 2 applicants need to demonstrate they are either working in the industry or have a regular voluntary position for at least 10 hours a week and level 3 and above must have an interview to satisfy that they meet the criteria and are working in an appropriate role to produce the evidence for an assessor to observe in the workplace.

We continually update our courses and this particular course has been tailored so that it can be delivered in a short timeframe to allow learners to be out of the workplace for the minimal time needed to ensure they complete this valuable course. Enrolment Instructions

You can enrol in a number of ways - in person, online or through your employer. If you are new to a job you will undergo this training either in-house or with a training provider. We can offer you this valuable training in just 4 days. The next programme is in September and other dates will be available for individualised programmes or on our website.
