About the Course

This course is designed for those who have little knowledge or experience of Decorating but have an interest and desire to complete small home improvement projects.

Course Content

The course will cover safe use of tools, basic painting techniques, types of paint, different finishes, hanging wall paper and other decorative finishes. Staff will give advice and guidance on small projects that you might be considering in and around your home.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal requirements, however you will need an interest in developing basic knowledge in decorating.

Equipment Requirements

Sensible shoes and overalls will be required.

Assessment

There are no formal assessments for this course.

Progression

Students may wish to progress on to one of the accredited decorating qualifications, or another beginners course offered by City College.

About the Course

This Level one qualification will teach you all the basics of Decorating. It is ideal for those who are interested in following a career in Painting or decorating and who are already working within the trade but lacking qualifications.

Course Content

The course will be mainly practical but also includes theory elements. The qualification is split into units that include General Safety, Preparing surfaces, using brushes and rollers, safe use of ladders and platforms.

Entry Requirements

Students must have an interest in obtaining a recognised qualification in the Decorative trade and a reasonable understanding of Mathematics and English to cope with the technical aspects of the course.

Equipment Requirements

Safety shoes and protective clothing must be worn.

Progression

The Level two NVQ is the natural progression route for those who are successful at level one.

This course is designed for learners actively involved in the Industry and can be completed as an OSAT (on site assessment and training) route or part time evening course. Either way you will need to be employed and able to put together a portfolio of evidence to show you are competent within painting and decorating.

This is a course for tradesmen who are employed and seeking a qualification or learners in work interested in getting training to enable themselves to prove their competent.

There are a number of ways this qualification can be completed, either through On Site Assessment and Training (OSAT) who are working in Industry for at least five years. College evening classes and assessment or the Experienced worker Practical Assessment. (EWPA)

On site assessment and training (OSAT) route can be used for trades people with a minimum of Five years trade experience. The Experienced Worker Practical Assessment Route (EWPA)  can be achieved in Painting and Decorating as a stand alone NVQ Level 2. It's unique and a highly flexible way to achieve an NVQ L2 in one or two days depending on the craft area. It's generally open to highly experienced trades people who have and still are  working in the Industry who are yet to have gained a level two qualification.

This course covers surface preparation, the application of paints and wallpapers, scaffolding, health and safety.   Our qualified assessors can visit you on site to ensure a minimum of disruption to your business.

Equipment Requirements

You will need to provide your own safety footwear and overalls.

Assessment

Assessments are sub divided into two sections:

• Practical competences and skills
• Job knowledge questions and/or assignments

Progression

Students may wish to advance on to the NVQ Level 3.

An Interview will be required before enrolment on to this course to ensure you can cover the criteria of the course.

About the Course

The Level 2 Diploma in Painting & Decorating is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of people, enabling them to work in their industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification.

• Safe working practices in construction
• Information, quantities and communicating with others
• Building methods and construction technology
• Preparation of surfaces for decorating
• Applying paint system by brush and roller
• Applying standard paper to wall and ceiling
• Producing specialist decorative finishes
• Applying water born paint system using HVLP spray equipment
• Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms

Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements for the course are GCSE grades C/D English and Maths, or relevant equivalent qualifications. (Practical qualifications may also be considered as an alternative entry depending on grade achieved). Course allocation is subject to a good achievement and attendance report from school (if school leaver) and a successful interview in college demonstrating interest and commitment to study.

Assessment

Achievement of each unit by internal testing undertaken by the trainer. Each knowledge unit

also has a mandatory series of questions and answers produced by CAA and managed by

the trainer.

Synoptic practical assignment set by CAA and controlled by the trainer. Successful

completion of the assignment will be needed before the qualification can be completed.

Online test covering the core units and the occupational units must be passed to achieve

the qualification. The test will be an independent test of knowledge and understanding.

Progression

On successful completion of the course, students could seek employment in Painting and Decorating companies in both the private and public sectors, Alternative from this programme candidates may also progress on to NVQ’s or other Level 3 courses to further develop their skills and gain employment in supervisory, management or technical support roles.

This course covers surface preparation, the application of paints and wallpapers, scaffolding, health and safety with optional units to choose from subject to your organisation.

 You will receive input on the areas where you require training.You will then be required to complete a portfolio of evidence to confirm competence.

OSAT (On-Site Assessment and Training) is another route to gaining an NVQ that is available to workers who are already experienced but do not have formal qualifications.  Regular college attendance is not required and you can start at any time after your interview.  You will build up a portfolio of evidence with your Tutor who will also visit your workplace to assess your work.

Success Story

A recent self employed learner his level 3 within a year and asked if he could achieve more than the one required optional unit. We were able to assist him and he achieved airless spraying,wide vinyl and specialist papers.
