About the Course
The Pre-degree Foundation course is an intensive and memorable learning experience. You will be introduced to a broad range of art and design areas, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, 3D design, animation, photography, digital media, textiles and fashion. The course will provide you with an educational experience which will help you to develop your own sense of personal direction and enable you to produce a substantial and high quality portfolio of work in your chosen area of specialism. The course tutors have significant expertise and experience in their particular specialist areas and will support and guide you to make informed decisions about which area of Art and Design you wish to specialise in at BA level and will best suit your ambitions and ability. On the Foundation course we place strong emphasis on the ideas and attitudes which underlie the different areas of art and design. We expect you to develop a sense of where you stand within the broad range of cultural ideas that provide the context for contemporary artists and designers. We do not undervalue practical skills and techniques; these will be introduced to you as and where appropriate, but we feel they should be placed in their proper context. This means that you will often be given considerable latitude in your responses, but that we will be questioning and discussing critically the development of your work and ideas and expecting you to do the same. Course Content
The course is run over a 32 week teaching year and comprises ten units, four of which are mandatory plus six optional units. A very large part of the teaching on the course comes in the form of projects. The initial stages of the course are preparatory and diagnostic and you will undertake a broad and challenging sequence of project work and workshops. In the Pre-Christmas section of the course you will undertake a series of workshops and projects which will help you build up a portfolio of work and give you an understanding of the nature and potential of areas of specialist study that are available to you. After Christmas you will choose three areas of study; your selected specialist area of study and two further areas of study and will then devote most of your time to extending and developing your increasingly personal interests and building the portfolio you will take for interview at BA level.
Success StoryThe course has been running at City College for eight years. It has a proven success rate for student progression onto a wide range of Art and Design degree level courses, both locally and at a broad range of universities throughout the UK. The Foundation course is the standard preferred route into BA Art and Design courses and acts as a vitally important and highly valued stepping stone onto HE programmes. Tutors working on BA courses very much prefer applicants who have successfully completed a Foundation year. It is also true to say that the vast majority of Art and Design students look back on their Foundation year with fond memories and warm appreciation. The Foundation course is a pivotal and highly valued educational experience. Entry RequirementsThe minimum entry requirements for the course are five GCSE passes at C or above plus one A-level (normally in an art or design related subject), or equivalent qualifications You will also need to show a portfolio of work, at interview, demonstrating a range of your skills, ability and potential. Your portfolio should ideally include drawing, photography, mixed media work and evidence of research and writing ability. Applications from mature students will be reviewed on an individual basis. Formal qualifications are not an entry requirement, however you will need to show a portfolio of work and provide a satisfactory previous school or work report. You will also need to to show a strong commitment and interest in Art and Design. Learning Style
In Art and Design learning is centred around practical work which takes place in the dedicated studio space and in various workshops. Practical work is augmented and supported by contextual studies and art history. In common with most art and design courses we make use a range of teaching methods, including lectures, reviews of work, seminars, tutorials, self directed study days and study trips. In a typical week you may, for example, attend a contextual studies seminar, receive a one to one tutorial, undertake several sessions working on projects in the studio, develop work in the 3D workshop and attend a photography class. In each session, in every class, tutors are present to guide and support your work and your ideas and help you progress and achieve. On the Foundation course we want you to get into the habit of discussing, of debating, your own work and ideas and the work of others. Fostering and sharing a positive, supportive and open learning environment and culture is very important to us and to your success on the course. Equipment RequirementsA wide variety of art and design specialist equipment is used throughout the year. Students are expected to provide basic equipment and most expendable materials. The college will provide some basic items. A full list is available on request but will vary in cost depending on specialist pathway interest. Students may also purchase a range of basic art equipment from the college shop at cost price. A detailed list with prices will be issued at enrolment. AssessmentAssessment is an important and integral part of the learning process and throughout the course you will receive continuous feedback about how your work is progressing through formative and summative assessments. In the final stage of the course you will devote significant time to developing and exhibiting a major project of work. Your Foundation Diploma assessment will be based on this work which will be graded at pass, merit or distinction. Throughout the course individual and group critiques, as well as one to one tutorials, are used regularly by course tutors to provide you with useful and comprehensive advice and guidance about your work. Progression
The course acts as an initial vitally important stepping stone onto a wide and expanding range of art and design activities and opportunities. For the majority of students the next step after Foundation is to take up specialist study on a chosen BA Art and Design programme. This could lead to a career (including where required further study at MA and PhD level), in any area of art and design; graphic design, illustration, fine art, fashion, textiles, 3D design, interior design, animation, art history, digital media, curatorship, art journalism, teaching etc. The scope for potential career destinations within the world of art and design is virtully unlimited with the Foundation year providing the all important initial building block. Additional InformationThe Foundation course is a one year full time programme. Sessions times start at 9.00 am typically around 4.00pm. Timetabled sessions are spread throughout the week. Time and resources are available for students to undertake self directed study during the week at college. Students should aim to duplicate guided taught hours in their own time. If you are under 19 at the start of the course, and studying a full time course, there are no tuition / exam fees. If you are over 19, you are liable for tuition / exam fees – please contact Student Services. Enrolment InstructionsIn the first instance you should look at the College website; www.Southampton-city.ac.uk. Open days are timetabled throughout the year. Normally you will be invited for a portfolio interview at the College - these normally take place in the Spring term. Interviews are conducted by either the Course Leader or a Course tutor and involve looking at your portfolio of work together and discussing your ideas, your skills, your ambitions etc. Essentially we are looking for students who have at least the minimum required qualifications in place but who also can show us their enthusiasm, their sense of committment and their potential.
